Maybe you and him should swap recipes. You start taking oregano oil, he starts using coconut oil, it's the best of both worlds.
|
I don't think it will stop the flu but I'll try the coconut oil for cooking. There seems to be something to that, moreso than the oregano oil.
FWIW, exercise, hygiene and controversially vitamin C help prevent flu or at least alleviate symptoms. |
When I need medical advice, it's good to know that I can get it on Bike Forums. :roll eyes:

Another shot people might consider is a shingles shot. If you had chicken pox as a kid you might get shingles. I think starting next year medicare will pay for them also.
Many insurance plans now cover it with no out-of-pocket cost. Like influenza vaccination, the shingles shot doesn't guarantee you won't get shingles but greatly lowers the chances and if you do come down with it, should be milder. |

I keep reminding my wife to ask for the shot in her upcoming physical.
I got mine during my last visit in November this year. Of course this may all be for naught since the world will end on 12/21/12. |
Doctors,,shot,, flu shots, shingle shots, shots for fun,,no thank you.
I'll stick to what my grandfather and his father before him did to live a long healthy life. Eat fresh vegetables and drink a little 'good' Tennessee or Kentucky whisky every single day... |

The recommendation is now for 50 and above to get the shingles vaccine, I seem to remember.
Bill Fifty Plus (50+); colonoscopy, shingles vaccine and flu shots given here. |

Bill Nothing wrong with getting it at 50+ except could be insurance reimbursement issues??? It's still about $200 if paying cash. |

FDA ruled for 50+. My insurance has paid for mine.

My singing group was supposed to sing at a very upscale retirement community tomorrow.
CANCELLED due to flu quarantine. |

What flu quarantine?
"Sorry, to let you know this, but we MUST cancel your performance at Lincoln Meadows tomorrow. We have been quarantined for a flu virus here" |

My flu shots are mandated. My body is public domain and all that. Sore arm for a day or two. I've not got the shingles vaccine. I need to. If I get shingles, I'm out of commission at least until the sores scab over. It's on my list of things to do. During the Avian flu scare it seems there were some flu quarantines. Serious stuff. We ain't as young as we used to be. |

Approved those those 50+ but the CDC still says: "The Shingles Prevention Study involved individuals age 60 years and older and found the shingles vaccine significantly reduced disease in this age group. The vaccine is currently recommended for persons 60 years of age and older."

My grandfather and father didn't have long, healthy lives, both died young. I'll hedge my bets and not have anymore "fun" than I have already had. Glad it is working for others, it is strictly a personal decision as it should be. Bill |
I generally always get a flu shot and never have any effects.
I also believe in building up natural immunity wherever possible, e.g. be in company of other with flu, drink from public water fountain. |

Thanks for the correction Jan, I was not sure about what the exact wording is/was. Here the shots are $250.00 at almost every place you can get them. Monica and I are getting the shot anyway, with all of my health problems I don't need anything else.

Glad it is working for others, it is strictly a personal decision as it should be. Bill I had shingles when I was in my 20's and found that they were VERY painful. I don't want to try it again. Actually, I had read that if you've already had shingles you don't need the vaccine -- but I think I'll play it safe. Actually they don't really know enough about it yet. There is apparently a debate over whether you only need to get it once or every 5 years... |
The pharmacy checked on coverage on the shingles vaccination by my health insurance carrier. It isn't covered as I am 56 and Monica is 55 so we will gladly pay the cost ourselves. Much cheaper and less painful than having shingles.

I strongly believe this to be incorrect. I had Shingles about 30 years ago, and it was strongly recommended that I et the vaccine. You can get Shingles again and again. In some cases, it reflects a lowering of the immune system.

She said I may have to pick up the medicine and take it to one of their in-plan urgent care places -- but if I did that they would pay for both the medication as well as the injection itself.

Mine was injected by a pharmacist. |
I keep meaning to get the shingles vaccination - my wife had it at about 35, on her head and face, and was miserable for about 6 months. Just been lazy, I suppose. Need to do that with my next Dr. visit.

Just checked my Explanation of Benefits for the last Doc visit where I also got a Shingles immunization and TDap booster and the company paid for all the injections(with their adjustments of course). So, for me at least, Anthem BC/BS of VA paid for the Shingles injection and I'm 54.

Good question, and I wondered myself, also. My only clue is the email I got cancelling our performance because the retirement community was under a "flu quarantine" . and I have no clue what that means or how you do one.
