So here's the update. Got the ok to wean myself off of the neck brace last week. Saturday (11 wks after the accident), I got out for an easy 13 mile ride (and kept the wheels on the ground this time). I'm a little worse for the wear, but will heal. The weather's just starting to turn crappy here, so more of the riding will probably be on my trainer than outside, but it's nice to be riding again.

The bike lived as well. Frame's ok. I pulled off the carbon fork and checked it as thoroughly as I can. It looks ok as well. I loosened the spokes on the very pretzeled front wheel and did a rough truing with a couple of 4x6's and all my body weight. Put it on my truing stand and got it to within 2 mm or so. The back wheel was no big deal. I will need to replace the wheels as the braking is a little rough to say the least, but they're rideable for now. I did have to replace the bar tape...the bar looks ok. So I did a real good job of protecting the bike with my body, I guess

Just read your accident post. Yikes! I'm staring the big Six-O in the face...and still bombing down hills like an idiot kid...but after reading your story I think I'm going to start tempering my enthusiam with a bit more caution in the future. I've had enough experience over the past 40 decades biting the turf in falls jumping hunt fences at speed while foxhunting - I don't want...or need.... to add to that list a fall on pavement while flying downhill on my bike.

So thanks for the cautionary tale. And here's hoping for your full recovery...and for your bike as well.

Missed the original accident post. Glad to see you are doing so well. My experience is that rehab is a stair step kind of thing. You've been wise enough to be in good shape to start and you are pushing so there is little doubt you will turn out OK. Bests to you.

I just read your post that somehow I missed back then, but wishing you the very best in your recovery. I believe I will reduce my enthusiam on the hills also. Roads are mostly all good here for the most part but I can see how that can happen. Rest well, get better and spring is coming. For now I will put on some snow miles for you.
