What an incredible life he lived, another one of "The Greatest Generation" showed us the way it was supposed to be done. Godspeed Bill, hope the riding in Heaven is sweet.

Well, there are no old, fat people. Really. Think about it.

A zombie reply perhaps, most of the 80+ people I know are "old fat people", at least by BMI standards. Seems like that extra weight gives them staying power. But a pretty sedentary bunch mostly, they've given up exercising for sightseeing and TV. My comment was about those who are still out there riding, those I see are smaller frame, shorter riders...and been that way their entire lives.

The number of big, muscular, fit guys riding into their 70s, I can't think of one. They're playing golf. Speculating, I think the risk of serious injury in a fall, crash seems more present to this group.

My mother is obese and turning 100 in July. She doesn't bike, has really never exercised, but plays a mean game of bridge. Her mind is sharp although her short term memory is beginning to go.

Curious if they are all shapes and sizes. I'm thinking about the one guy I know that is riding well into his 70s, he's like 5'8', thin build, almost frail looking. Quite the hill climber. I don't think I've seen any big guys riding into their 70s..wonder if body type is a key factor.

I doubt it. You generally don't see big people living to be that old. It's always "A little old man" or "A little old lady".....how often do ya hear of a "big old lady"?

"Honey, I helped this big old lady across the street today... She was huge! Musta weighed 250 lbs..." -That's something you never hear.

My mother is 88- 5'3"/107 lbs. says if it wasn't so hilly around here, she'd get a bike! I have to keep my shed locked, because if she has access to the lawn mower, she'll walk over and mow! Last spring she painted the 14' wide gate across my driveway.....

Wow...that's awesome. Italian or Russian?

Today I am 75 and I am fat at 5'10 and 230. But I rode Big Bend twice last year as well as ACA Cycle Utah. I am going for the TransAm the first of May solo self-contained.
I don't think I am unusual as I meet quite a few 70+ riders albeit most are very trim.

Set that bar for me!

By June, I should be down to about 165 pounds, probably my ideal weight with my present musculature. Got my weight down to about 158 three years ago and I could tell I was losing muscle. My wife kept after me to add protein to my diet. I presently have two bikes, a tourer and a road bike. I ride the tourer more as the gearing is better suited to the hills in North Georgia where I live. My knees are pretty weak. I always ride alone. Have never attempted to meet other riders in this area except my LBS. Really enjoy riding. Hope you enjoy the pictures of my bikes, both high quality steel Panasonics, made in Japan, mid 80's.
