Back from the health care abyss

I haven't been around for a few years. I came down with asthma in early 2009 and haven't been able to ride much. More than 8-10 miles had me gasping for air. I wasn't responding to normal Asthma medications. It got really bad beginning last August and in the last reshuffle of doctors one of them discovered I had "silent reflux" which is acid reflux without the symptoms. The acid was getting into my lungs and clogging me up. Had a "nissen fundiplication" last week and can breathe normally for the first time in 4 years! Still about 4-6 weeks away from riding again. Whew! I hope I'm done with medical issues for a few years

During my absence and in between hordes of Doctors I did manage to build a new house, restore a lobster skiff and a sailboat.

That's GREAT!

Not sure if that physician was lucky or good -- but he sure did the job.

Keep us posted on how things go and your riding. Picture will be appreciated!

You velonomad have acomplished more during your "abyss" than I have while in pretty good health! A house and 2 boats, that's excellent.

The euphoria of finding out what a problem is and then getting the "Cure" is great.

Had that a couple of times and have just recently had it with a minor problem that is going to be cured.

But I do not envy you at all. All that fitness to find and the new bike to be bought because the "OLD" one doesn't go uphills any longer and It must be old style as it has lost its speed on the flats in comparison to all the new bikes that keep passing you--And what about that saddle that must have gone off as it no longer fits

Take it steady on the comeback and get out often. You know how fit you used to be and give yourself a year to get back to that stage. Don't try and do it all in one go.

Welcome back

Awesome! You have your life back. What's better than that? Well, actually your ability to adjust and continue living with what you had as a disability is what's really awesome. Congratulations.

Velonomad - it must feel absolutely incredible to be able to breath again! As a fellow asthma sufferer, especially in my youth, I know what it's like. When you can't breath, nothing else matters, as the American Lung Association used to say. Good luck for a full recovery and return to biking fitness.

Great news! Welcome back.
I'm hoping my wife won't see how much you were able to accomplish while keeping the bikes parked for a while.

Thanks again for the welcome back and well wishes! I had a minor set back a week ago that kept me another week on clear liquids and feeling crappy. Last night was the first time off the clear liquid diet. Mashed potatoes and gravy never tasted so good! Doc told me last week he doesn't want me riding again until I see him again in May, but I can use my trainer in an upright position at very low resistance. In the mean time I'll ride vicariously through you all!
