Today, for a birthday treat, I rode across the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge and down the Riverfront Trail to the St. Louis Archgrounds. It wasn't an auspicious start, when my lower back went "sproing" as I lifted my bicycle onto the bike rack, giving me the gift of extreme lower back twinges for the rest of the day.
Because of my back, I didn't get started as early as I wished, so I had to forgo the little side trip across the McKinley Bridge. I somehow managed to get the bike off the rack at the parking lot without need for medical assistance. Medical assistance would have been available though, since there was an emergency vehicle from the fire department there. I don't know what the problem was, but there was a bus and a crowd of Mennonites. I should'a taken a picture of that... I enjoyed the pictures. I hadn't realized that St. Louis was now a ghost town.

Wheels by h2oxtc, on Flickr No ride today - was visiting my son in Toronto and saw this window display. More interesting is that its not a bike shop.

I've thought of doing that myself, as it's only about the same from my house to the office.
The thing that makes me hesitate is that with the extra commuting time, plus the time to shower and change before getting to my desk, then changing out of work clothes into something suitable for riding home after work would add over 3 hours to my day. The upside is that I'd quickly learn to ride in the dark - and the cold! :) But you are right ... there is a lot of ancillary time ... changing in and out of bike clothes (twice) ... packing and unpacking stuff ... and that does add up. It probably does add three hours to my day altogether. The way I figure it, the other option is 1-1.5 hours commuting by car plus an hour in the health club everyday. To me, it's worth the extra hour to spend it on my bike. Health clubs are OK, but ... |

I sometimes go to the old Chain of Rocks Bridge on my lunch breaks.

What are all those cards plastered all over the spokes?
Oh, and doing 25 miles, with many uphill sections, after your lower back goes "SPROING", is NOT recommended. And I've learned to love those back-brace belts. :) |

During my coffee break on today's ride, I was treated to a high-altitude dog fight between a raven and an osprey. Got a great shot (jk) of it, I think I'll send it in to the Audubon society:

Just kidding about St. Louis being a ghost town -- there's no one around in your photos.

This has nothing to do with cycling of course, but given the demographic here, I thought you all might enjoy it.
A wizened old patent attorney gave me this to remind me that sometimes, little errors can have big consequences. For those of you not in the know, a "spectrum analyzer" is an expensive piece of test equipment kinda like an oscilloscope, that shows a signals spectral (frequency) content as a function of time. WESCON is the test equipment geek convention. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=341838 |
Coming down from Col de la Madone on friday in great summer temps and walking with my wife in more autumnly Norway today, sunday. Had a good ride this morning and did not feel all that let down by the prospect of not riding in shorts for some months. Had a great two weeks riding and swimming near Menton.

Fall has landed in So Cal and the weather has been perfect. About 75 degrees, long shadows, clear blue skies and fluffy white clouds. I generally do a climb on my mountain bike in Chino Hills State Park on SUndays... ran across this guy... he came out of the bushes in front of me and then climbed up on the bank and posed... I saw 2 others later on and several coyotes... active wildlife day. Coming down the Canyon trail I was just enjoying the lovely weather (last weekend it was Africa hot!).
