Post-ride: Doggie Diner (West Coast thing). Truly awful food that nobody missed when it went under.

Jelenk clothing (sort of exists as ASICS). I still have a couple of Jelenk athletic shirts from the early '70s. No wonder they went under, their clothes were too durable.

Reminds me of the trademark shenanigans between the Czech Budojevicky Budvar and the US Budweiser (Anheuser-Busch). As if someone might confuse the products. One is beer, and the other is... well... Budweiser.

And I think a new company was formed to keep manufacturing spare parts for Saab cars.

I went to the Czech Republic with my son's high school band a couple of years ago. Stopped right at the border for a snack. When in Czech, do as the Czechs do, so naturally I had a candy bar and a beer. The shocking thing is that Budvar tastes (at least to me) ... just like Budweiser. Whoa.

Philadelphia famous names of my youth:
Ortlieb's, Ballantine, Kaier, Reading, Sunshine and Schmidt's Beer; Wanamakers, Lit Brothers and Snellenberg Department Stores; Connie Mack (Shibe Park) Stadium; Hot Shoppes Drive-in Restaurant. Probably every local name in banking is gone including PSFS (Philadelphia Savings Fund Society) where I saved money with a weekly dime or so while in grade school, Girard and many others gobbled up by the big boys.

I still think the fact that Ortlieb"s Beer is no longer available, especially in Philly, is a crime. I was taught that Ortliebs and Scrapple made Philadelphia run, those and a real Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich. My dad was stationed at the Navy Yard during WWII on heavy cruiser doing Atlantic anti-submarine patrol and escort duty.

I used to ride my bike to Kaplan's bakery which was right across the street from the Big O's brewery and get a couple loaves of Jewish Rye and ride the six miles home. Can't get a decent slice of bread or edible deli food in Iowa. A Cheese steak? These farm boys haven't a clue.

Heck, this being the 50+ forum and all, think of all of the beers that are no longer available - national or regional brands - not local craft beers or microbrews. That'd be a looooong list!

Fortunately the lost names have been more than compensated for by the emergence of an incredible array of excellent microbreweries. Even some of the regional breweries on the verge of becoming national, if not national already, are producing extraordinarily good specialty beers.

My local favorite is Harpoon IPA for general consumption. My special preference is Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA when I'd like a beer with more, ah, substance.

After a while, I started buying my own name tags to put on luggage because every time I put an airline tag on, that brand disappeared within a few years. The exception was American, when I hit freebie frequent flier status. Oops, bankrupt and merging with USAir...

I qualify my list with the caveat that I do not count the companies that no longer exist as an entity but their name or a product line name is used by someone else. Too many European and American bicycle companies' names are in use now but are not the same level at all. I know several European makers are available in the EU as the original maker/name but not here in the states or like a few BD "brands" are under one name here by licensing agreements. They just are not the same to me, not just bicycles save a very few items or companies.

Others may well feel differently, rightly so, JMVHO.

The problem with that is I have absolutely no idea what they're like. For example, I was out in the Phoenix area last month, and stopped at a place called the Brew Haus in Cave Creek for lunch. There must have been over 50 beers on tap, but only a few that I'd ever seen or heard of - soooo, which do I choose? I had two tall Dortmunders, but whose I couldn't tell you.

As for deceased computer companies, they are legion: MITS, IMSAI, Cromemco, Godbout/Compupro, Pro-Log, SSM, Intertec, Processor Technology, CompuColor, MicroAce/Timex-Sinclair, Digital Research Computers (not to mention Digital Research (Software)), Ohio Scientific, SWTPC, Heathkit, TRS, Commodore, Atari, PineApple/PineCom, MOS Technology, Alpha Micro, CCS... The list goes on...

I miss Heathkit. My dad had an SB-200 HF amplifier that worked really well. When dad passed, my brother got the amplifier. At least it's still in the family.
