It's just the way the snow was sticking on the knobs, they aren't studded. I sure could have used studded tires a few times this winter though.

For the last couple of weeks, I've been riding my 1975 Viscount, which I've converted to a fixed gear. It's 13 miles each way between home and work. Gearing is 52/19, which works out to 74 inches.

Here it is, parked inside at work.

Below is a winter project that I've thoroughly enjoyed this spring. KHS Z2HB (Zinn Hed Boone) Aero Comp converted to a single speed. It's running 42:18 which I find is a pretty reasonable balance considering I have quite a few 5% to 8% hills to ride. The 52:19 on the Viscount would likely have me walking some of the hills around here.



And more recently I'm working on a new project which I'm hoping will turn out quite lovely. Still waiting on a few parts.

I finished building this Genesis Equilibrium last weekend. I'm pleasantly surprised at how light a steel bike can be (Reynolds 725 plus carbon fork). My leg is still not very strong so I have only managed a couple of very short rides on it, both which I was really pleased with. I'm now off to Italy for a couple of weeks holiday, but I am definitely going to enjoy this bike when I get back, as the summer goes on. I'm optimistic that between this and the Raleigh Randonneur I recently bought I may get to like riding with drop bars again!

The stem/steerer combination doesn't look good yet, but have today bought a shorter stem and I didn't want to cut the steerer until I settle on the right riding position after a couple of weeks use.

A lady and her husband, both from New York but now living in a remote area of Vancouver Island, sent me this 1970 Mercier for free, providing, of course, that I cover shipping costs. I finished the refurbishment yesterday, double checked everything this morning and now it is time for the test ride. Test riding a vintage road bicycle, where I live, is always exciting, as the bike and I navigate our way down a gravel road seeking the black ribbon...



If the bicycle demonstrates a reasonable degree of stability on gravel, it will become my new cottage/junk bicycle - the one I take out on pooey-stinko days.

I've been kind of kicking around the idea of selling this one off and on for a few years now, set up with Shimano 600 8-speed currently.
I'm going to bring it in to work next week and take a lunchtime lap on it, finally got the right brifter somewhat functioning again (gummed up from lack of use). I just don't ride it and don't want to mess up the paint and am tired of people reading "Soft Paint" on the frame and then trying to dig their thumbnails into the paint to see how "soft" it is. "Soft Paint" refers to the paint being un-coated if I recall correctly.

That's some macho gearing on a fix. Please say you have a flat commute and that the lights are timed.

It's not as macho as it looks. It's 52/19, which works out to a 74" gear. The commute is mostly flat. I'm super lucky that almost the entire ride is off the streets and on a bike path with no motor vehicles, so the timing of lights is not an issue. I have a front brake, and I use it almost exclusively rather than my legs for stopping. I'm done proving my machismo with my legs as brakes.

I prefer the same gearing as you... works well for all around cycling and wrapping up as many teeth as you can to get that gear smooths out the drivetrain.

@Sixty Fiver, I could claim that's my reason, but the chainring with the round cut outs just looks cool. Plus it lets people think I have a tall ratio, even though I don't.

Sounds like the right machine for the job. Well done. I guess you're right about the gear inches, with the 19. I've never gotten the hang of gear inches. I consult with the Sheldon Brown calculator and use his ratio, and with that I understand, because that's how I taught myself. At any rate, that big chainring is industrial and boss-looking.

I'm with you on the brake. That leg stopping is a young man's game.
