After 40 years of cycle commuting on a year-round minimal one-way 14 mile route (and previous long distance touring), I have this year finally assembled IMO, the perfect bicycle fleet:

• One nearly year-round dry,clean-road bike (Specialized S-Works carbon fiber road bike,except for deep winter with lingering salt)

• One year-round wet,dirty-road bike (Specialized Diverge Elite aluminum road bike, just recently acquired)

• One winter bike for anything (Cannondale steel mountain bike with Marathon Winter studded tires always on, for the least possibility of ice…)

I'm very happy with my Specialized S-Works for dry weather riding; my Cannondale Mountain bike was pretty heavy and cumbersome as a Wet/Winter beater. So I recently bought the Specialized Diverge Elite aluminum bike as a wet weather beater, and it rides nearly as nicely as the S-Works, and I'm very happy with the Diverge. The ride and shifting are as smooth as the S-Works, but the feel is more”solid,” with 30C tires. I think this is a great all-purpose bike. Now my riding needs are completely met. I liken my three bikes to a Lamborghini, a Lexus, and a Humvee.

Goodness, this is not the first year you would call yourself an athlete. Well done! 2016 might be my record year in a long time, as I'll reach a mere 2,000 miles (3,200 km) for the calendar year.

After my dear wife passed away. I found cycling so therapeutic in my grieving process. I dreamt up a trek from the Terry Fox monument in Ontario, to her graveside in Alberta (Canada) 2450km. cycled 7000 km before I told anyone what I was doing with my month long vacation time.

As for an Athlete, by definition I am now. I never have been before. But the preparation cycling chiseled off 50lbs. A bonus, sure not my intention. I feel so much better this fall. The weight loss in good for my physical health. But the trek, and the new hobby is super on my mental health.

I had a 10% weight loss thru a summer hiking/backbacking commitment and the improvement in mental health thru physical capability and stamina is HUUUGE! The cycling after that summer program was great. While it lasted.

The Ciocc was an off the shelf buy in Germany. Came with tubulars, which I still use today. Had the wheels rebuilt with Shimano 600EX hubs. Over the years, it was completely upgraded with Shimano 105 components. This is my climbing bike.

My Huffy, bought when stationed in Nebraska. Upgraded the drive train with Suntour 34/46 front and a large 36T in the rear. It's a great touring bike. Roade in the first edition of BRAN ( Bike Ride Across Nebraska) and one trip in Ragbrai. Also several century rides on this one. Don't ride it much, any more.

I really only got into cycling for fitness but as soon as I achieved that I learnt that pleasure aspects.

When I got back into cycling after a 15 or so year hiatus I picked up a cyclocross bike from Bikes Direct. I put about 3000 miles on it and enjoyed it though was frustrated with the shift quality of the Claris shifters.

Here is a pic.



I soon came across a completely original 1973 World Voyageur for 50 bucks. I changed out the seat, tires and tubes and started riding it. Here it is.

I picked up a 2000 Trek 820 to use during the summer in New England.



In the meantime I picked up a Fuji Police Special. Peeled the police stickers off and added a set of knobby tires and use it when I feel like getting dirty.




I decided the Motobecane was too big for me and I already mentioned the frustration with the shifters so I tor it down to a bare frame. I found a Handsome Cycles/ Twin Six Speedy Devil frame off ebay and started building it up. The plan was to use the usable drivetrain parts from the Motobecane but only ended up using the wheels and seat post. Here it is on a gravel ride and a pose before I got my Brooks saddle in.





I wanted to do a vintage mountain bike drop bar conversion so I picked up a 1995 Fuji Discovery and used the Sora rear derailleur and 9 speed cassette from the Motobecane as well as some new bits.
