Buy a good lock.

You don't want to lose that new treasure.

I agree, buy the helmet and shoes at the LBS (local bike shop) as those have to fit right.

For shoes, I suggest mountain bike shoes, but not clunky ones with lots of sole, instead look for the sleeker, lighter models. Those will still be okay to walk in, and accept a SPD "clipless pedal" cleat. I suggest a pedal that has an SPD binding on one side and a platform surface on the other. You can use the platform side as you get used to riding, then start using the SPD side. Clipless pedals have many benefits.

I suspect that you will like the bike if the fit is right.

My wife wife used a Cannondale T800 to cross the U.S. when she was nearing those mature years (54), and it is still in her stable of bikes.

I, too, am a woman of "mature age" - about 7 more than you. I've had what everyone said was a great light, titanium bike for years. Bought it from a friend years ago. Probably was I had shifting issues, fit issues. I hated riding. All our friends are longtime cyclists and quite knowledgeable. I trusted them. After a few looked at the bike and rode it and declared it fine, I assumed I just wasn't cut out to ride and gave up. Last year I took it to the LBS and he (who is also a friend and friend of the bike's previous owner) said the bike was a terrible build. Parts didn't go together. So, finally, after years of avoiding riding because of the bike, I got a new road bike. It isn't fancy, but it fits, feels good, and encourages me to ride.

Soooo, my newbie advice for a gal like us is to make sure you spend enough on a bike that you'll want to ride; that it fits; it's for where you are right now; and don't think twice about keeping up with friends who may be long time riders. Do your thing the way YOU want. And, I agree, don't get a sofa cushion for a saddle. Good luck and enjoy!
