Normally this forum is not too bad. Guess it's because today is Monday....that will put most people in a bad mood, for non-retirees.

All I can contribute is that I wear clipless and have tumbled over four times over my two years on a bike. Once in the driveway...was exhausted at the end of a hard ride. The other three times stopped at an intersection. Guess that is not too often for over 14K miles on the bike, who knows??

Yes I still wear them but that is my preference

I was merely posting that I fell for the first time like many before me. I found it rather humorous that just when got full of myself thinking I was not going to fall that I indeed fell.

I ride clipless for foot retention on both my fixed gear and the recumbent trike. On the trike, if I have a foot come off the pedal at speed I risk serious injury, and on the FG, retention is critical as well. You like platforms, we get that, but respect others choices as well, and don't be using derogatory terms for those of us that do use clipless.

We do so for our reasons, you use yours for your own reasons. Personally, I like the greater power transfer as well, with clipless that's a gravy benefit.

PLanemaker, CLub Tombe is a huge club. All us clipless riders, well, almost all of us, have had that zero speed fall. It happens, and wer laugh at ourselves. Tombe is simply French for fall down. It's also referred to as Club Toombay (a corruption of the French). In tyhe clipless world, in geberal, there are 2 kinds of riders.....

Those of us who have made that slow topple, usuallu=y in front of many witnesses because we either forgot we were clipped, or because we got stuck in the cleats, and those it'll happen to soon.

Mine happened at Purdue University, when I was showing off, dooing track stands on my fixed gear. I did a slow topple, right into the rose bushes right in front of the Alpha Phi sorority at Purdue. My evil plan worked, though, because there must have been 20 sorority girls come running out to help the geezer on the fixie get untangled from the roses and bandage up the thorns damage.

It only takes once for your foot to slip off a platform pedal and getting your calf/achilles tendon thrashed to realize that isn't one of the positives to bicycling. (as I look at the rash on my calf from falling over in sand on my old mtn bike with toe clips and straps).

Now listen. It's Tombay, which is Anglization of the French tombez, which means to fall on your keister in front of hot babes, usually blondes walking their big ass dogs.

Clipless pedals require no justification other than its users can be a tremendous source of amusement to others.

Having said that, there is a je ne sais pas quality about being at a stoplight turning green and hearing a dozen feet clip in all together. It's just cool.

Here's one

Nice off-road ride the other day in Northern Argentina. Autumn leaves and glittery sunshine. Lovely rural ride. Rental bike, neither clips nor cleats nor spds nor nothing except some little studs on the open pedals which gripped tightly to my trail shoes.

I can attest that a topple into Argentinian bull poop is strangely strangely comfortable

Even better is SEEING about 10 roadies on an organised ride pull up in a row at a red light and all unclipping and putting the left foot down except the last one to arrive and he pulled up on the left of the line and entered Club Tombay by not unclipping-Falling right and knocking the whole row of riders over.


Club Tombay took a bit of thought to get the name right but it was agreed that there should be something for these ELITE riders that have excelled themselves by falling over due to failing to unclip when coming to rest or a stop. At this time "Club Med" was still in fashion but was not "American" enough. The French verb "Tomber" means to fall but still not right but near sounding and American is Tombay. It just sounded and looked right for what is an American based forum so Club Tombay finally had a name.

Certain rules for entry but the main one being that you have a fall by being unable to put a foot down when coming to a stop and having the inevitable meeting with the ground. Doesn't have to only be clipless pedals as clip and straps can also be a problem and due to the excellent qualities of some riders- it can also be done with platform pedals.

Myself, when starting clipless I spontaneously sat down 3X. But no-one saw 2X so maybe it was just 1X. Since then, 0X.
