I believe that I posted this story years ago here, but we have many new members to laugh at it again.

I once went riding on one of the local trails on a holiday (mothers day I believe) and the family units were out in strength walking the same trail. I stopped at a narrow road crossing/gate for one such unit and unclipped my left foot because I usually start on my right. As the folks came walking though the gate one adult who was talking and looking backwards casually walked through me............of course from my left...........and knocked me over before I could unclip the right foot.

Maybe I'm jinxing myself here, but in three years I've never fallen because I use SPD pedals and shoes. I guess I'm supposed to have taken a couple of zero MPH falls, but it hasn't happened. (Although I did have a close call/extremely awkward dismount when a dog ran out in front of me and then reversed its field like Barry Sanders. I had unclipped on the right, dog forced me to lean left, barely got my left foot clear in time. Dog's owner seemed amused.)

The first time I fell with clipless was about 20 years after I had started using them. It was a very gentle fall onto grass, and I burst out laughing. My wife thought I had done it on purpose and asked, "Why did you do that?"

OK, so I've had toe clips and straps on my pedals for over 30 years and haven't fallen yet because I've still been strapped in. I'm sure I've just jinxed myself and will fall tomorrow...

No, how many of you have done something similar - on a motorcycle? -with your g/f on the back? I always put my left foot down, keeping the right foot on the rear brake when at a traffic light - especially when on a hill. Well, she who will remain nameless counters my left lean with a rapid right lean. Bike falls over to the right. But what is in my right hand? Throttle. RPMs go up and in my haste to try to recover, my left hand comes off the clutch (while in 1st gear I might add...) Bike brodie-spins from under us and we go down in the gravel on the side of the road. wearing shorts. Ouch! My new bike is all scratched up, mirror and turn signals broken off, we're both bloody from gravel... Guy behind us at the light scrambles out of his car and asks if we are all right... I thought I'd die from embarrassment! I don't think I ever asked her to ride with me again!

Quite a coincidence, because I was thinking about this when reading the other Club Tombay thread.

Not as bad as yours, but around 1974 I'd ridden to the store with my g/f. I'd borrowed my roommate's Honda 350. I don't remember what I did, but I was starting it, and I fell over. She wasn't on, just standing and watching. Nothing hurt but the mirror and my pride.

A very slow speed spill on my motorcycle resulted in a very bad rotator cuff tear. It took me a year to recover and haven't ridden my motorbike since preferring to switch to a non motorized version of two wheel sport. Alas, it didn't result in a safer form of entertainment, having had two serious accidents with four wheeled idiots. I've come to the conclusion that unless I spent the rest of my life hiding in my basement, life itself is a game of chance so I'll press on. I have a few lives left and I intend to use them.

I'm 62 and fall all too frequently, usually when people are there to see it happen. Last one was Saturday when the group stopped in an area to regroup. I clipped in to go, thinking the rider in front of me was on his way off....by the time I realized he wasn't going anywhere, I was right on top of him with no where to go and very slight forward momentum with both feet clipped in and ended up dumping to my right side. I've learned to land so as to protect the bike, albeit at the cost of loss of skin and heavy bruising to the hip. That heals. It's the bruised ego, knowing everyone riding saw me drop the bike, that takes a long time to heal.
