No One Biking For Awhile

In Alaska villages lots of cycling and 4-wheeling. All that is coming to a halt as one village after another is destroyed,or nearly so, by flooding.

This was a cold, snowy Spring with cold temperature records set in many places. Then there has been a very rapid warm up. From snow and cold to the 80's in a week, here.

That means big, stubborn ice jams on the rivers with a lot of melt water forming large lakes behind. Then the ice breaks loose and moves downstream a few miles where the process repeats. Water rises and falls very quickly. It carries up to house sized blocks of ice into town destroying everything in their path.

Yesterday the water rose so fast in Galena residents had to evacuate with only the clothes on their backs. When they go home they will have major rebuilding before winter comes in September.

Keep these folks in your prayers as they cope with life.

And I thought we were having bad weather over here.

Reports this morning are that the 30 mile long ice jam on the Yukon is weakening. It has flooded areas 20 miles behind the jam. When it breaks there will be another somewhere down river.

Our river system had a slow start but seems to be flowing well. Minor flooding in low areas.

Those of us who live in rural areas have no trouble understanding Mother Nature is in charge.
