Ninety-one year-old Sy Perlis shattered the previous record by 52 pounds! This guy is my hero.

W O W!

That's a lot of weight for anyone. Many, if not most, people, at any age, couldn't bench that.

Clearly nobody has told the old guy that all that upper-body muscle will destroy his climbing ability on the bike.

I was at 225lbs a few years back, then let it go, currently at about 170 (one-time max) and building back up, or trying to.

Things seem to go south so fast if you aren't constantly on top and practicing. I did 72 pushups in a row last year for my 72nd birthday, but could only do about 35 in a row today - I want to do 73 this year.

People like this just blow my mind and inspire me to no end. I have befriended a lady, Mrs. G, that goes to the same MUP I go to. She is there about three to four times a week and has a tri-bike (Cannondale) and a road bike (Moots). Two years ago, she entered five cycling competitions and took gold at each one (she has the pictures to prove it). Her daily routine is to do a 25 mile bike ride, a one mile run, then go home and do a half mile swim. She is entering the same five cycling competitions again this year and hopes to win all five events again for her 85th birthday present to herself. I only wish I can still breath on my own at 85.

But you're not 91 and even so, many 20~30 year olds couldn't press 187 lbs. In my mid 30s, I could do 250 lbs 4x--never tried to do a max I could only do once, but regardless of what I could do or anyone else here, 187lbs is more than many much younger people can do.

Perhaps I did not make my point clear. In no way was I attempting to compare myself with the 91 yo, and, in fact, in a prior post called him "my hero."

I was attempting to illustrate how fast one can lose strength if not working on it a lot. And, that I, at 73, could only lift 170 whilst the 91 yo could lift 187+

Sorry if I miscommunicated.

By the way, I got my age wrong. I am 73, NOT 72. Oops!!

Denver they say the mind is the first thing to go!! I have watched my Younger brother in his late 30's bench press 560# without a bench shirt. He won the Drug free Power Lifters that year with the lift. He has held national and world records in the bench drug free. He doesn't compete anymore but still lifts religiosly. I'm very proud of him. The guy you mentioned is no slouch either.

Very Inspiring!

Strength training; especially crossfit seems to be a good thing for middle & older aged people.
A retired Phys Ed teacher from my school comes in 2 or 3 days a week to use the weight room - at 60 he can out lift anybody in the school from the young Phys Ed teachers to our top football players & Tier 1 junior hockey players. He helped me alot with cardiac recovery and has a motto - never do the same workout or eat the same food more than 2 days in a row, do high intensity intervals and strength training 2 or 3 times a week.

Too many in the gym will not put in the time to develop their technique and "groove". I put up 350 3yrs ago at the age of 52. It's amazing how the human body can go well beyond your willingness to pursue.
