Rides near Dewey Beach, DE

Just got a nice surprise. I'll be doing some work in Dewey Beach, DE in three weeks. I've never been there before. Any good places for road biking? I'm wondering about how safe the Coastal Highway is. Any suggestions/information is welcome!

I have done rides in the area while staying in Rehobeth but can't direct you to specific routes. Search in mapmyride. There are some nice rural road rides west of the beach. If you want a pleasant cruising ride head North along the beach road to Rehobeth and then either further north into parkland along the beach north of Henlopen Acres or along the bike path to Lewes. You can also just ride south along the beach toward Ocean City and back. Shoulders are pretty good.

For some reason coastal hwy attracts cyclists but it is not a good place to ride, especially this time of year. WAY too much traffic. Couple of suggestions:
1. Take Coastal Hwy south from Dewey. At Bethany, head west to Dagsboro, Dagsboro north to Millsboro, back roads from Millsboro to Rehoboth, then return to Dewey. This is our 'round the bay ride. Should be around 50 miles, depending on your choice of back roads.

2. From Dewey, take the bike path from Rehoboth to Lewes, then head west out of Lewes using back roads up towards Milton. Great back roads with no traffic.

I suggest early morning rides to beat the traffic and wind. Enjoy!

I appreciate the link. I spent two hours searching last night and got lots of site advertising, but no maps.

Search for Delaware bike map. It's a state sponsored site.
