Track day

I am having another birthday soon and my darling has decided to get me a "track day" for my birthday. I mentioned to her that I used to live near Encino Velodrome in southern California and would often watch events or people just riding. I have always regretted not trying to talk to the folks that worked at the track and trying to find a way to ride. I am sure it would have taken little more than an opening comment but I just watched.

I have ridden plenty of miles since then on a lot of different surfaces but really wanted to try the velodrome. Thanks to my wife I now have the opportunity.

I live a few hours from Trexlertown velodrome and "" has a few different beginner programs available so we are making plans for late August. I am pretty excited.

I am thinking about building up a track bike and getting used to riding a new machine and on a fixed gear. I use a spin bike in the winter for an hour at a time but what few rides I have taken on fixed "on the road" with borrowed machines were pretty awkward.

I hope some of you have ridden track a bit and can give me some hints. What do I need besides my kit?

Would it be better if I had my own bike and had some time riding fixed? (I have five weeks)

What should I expect?

Thanks, F
