Who has a bell?

At the risk of starting controversy;
Whom has a bell on their bike?
I have one on the bike I ride on the most on the MUPs. Some times it does good, other time not so much.
And besides it is leagally required in the state of New Jersey(my LCI wife keeps reminding me I need one on my new bike. Not gonna happen).
No helmets where mentioned in this posting.

I have a concealed carry permit for my bell.

In my neighborhood they are supposedly required, although I can't imagine that ever being enforced. I'd love to get a Hello Kitty bell, but I have a plain black bell. I think it helps on the MUP.

I occasionally carry one--But in my pocket. It does shift the walkers on the MUP as it whistles past their ears.

I did a long ride on the tandem and it was against the flow of hundreds of walkers doing the same trip in reverse. The tandem has a horn and I was using it to no avail and had to resort to yelling at the walkers to get them to notice we were there. This was 70 miles into a 100 mile offroad ride and we were a bit tired at the time. Then at a gateway after a slight slope downhill and several walkers stood in the gateway. We came to a stop and one of the walkers said I ought to get a bell. Her next words were "No need to use that language"

Had one - didn't help with rude motorists or multiple joggers with ear-buds on the MUP.

Replaced with AirZound and it works!

Thinking of putting a loud bell back on for MUP - mostly to alert kids & people with dogs (I am a dog owner & would not want someone using an Airzound around my pets). Unfortunately there are many eldery folks with dogs and either their hearing is going or they don't notice a bell.

I have one. It's a tiny little incredabell that goes "ting, ting' ting." On the Katy trail and the like it's about 50% effective.

To go much above 50% would take something obnoxiously loud like an AirZound horn. Countering rudeness with more rudeness doesn't appeal to me.

I had one but someone stole it with the bike it was attached to. I keep intending to get another as I ride on a trail most days and like to give warning before I pass, I certainly don't appreciate getting the fudge scared out of me. A quick whistle seems to be working fine for now.

One on every bike, including wife's. And, around here, they are about 95% effective on our MUPS, even with earphoned peds. Generally, our peds are well-trained. Our bicyclists, however, are getting worse about warning other bicyclists of their passing (i.e., "on your left," or "passing" or a bell). I have single, but loud, dingers, and generally ding 3 times, unless I see a movement to the right on the first or second ding (or a wave of the hand - which often happens).

I will agree, 96% effective around here. The other 5 are cyclists with earphones that drift into my path even after ringing the bell and shouting "onyerleft" several times.

Funniest thing happened to me after ringing my bell. I was training for some hardcore ride when I approached another rider from behind. He was on a sweet race bike. As I rolled by he shouted "bwahahahahaha! That's the first time I've ever seen a bell on a race bike."

I dunno, I guess he figured the bell took away from my aerodynamics?

I have a 'loud'(?) bike bell and I actually wrap kitty kat bell necklaces around my handle bars to jingle quietly while going through the park. Gets peoples attention in a very quiet and non-startling way. Since we are the kRaZy KaT people of our neighborhood, I can always color match the necklaces we have lying around to whatever bike Im riding.

Is there a "bell thread" in A&S to which this thread will eventually (or sooner) be moved?

I have about eight bikes, and there's a bell on each one. I use them often.

Ed "Big Daddy" Roth Rat Fink bell. On all three bikes.

I did, however, draw the line at streamers.

But that was mostly because the selection really sucks nowadays.

On the other hand, I do have a device on Radagast the Beige-and-Black which allows me to carry antenna balls/decor. The antenna decor usually seen on it is a rubber duck. I also have a Rat Fink antenna decor (it's hard to call them balls when they're not really round).

What frequency bell can you hear best when you are over 50? Does this keep it relevant to the 50+?

One Incredibell Duet Brass bell on each of my bikes, including the tandem. Not much good for auto traffic but useful for communicating with cyclists and peds - sometimes.
Anyone who points, waves or shouts out at our recumbent tandem gets an earful of the Duet plus my stoker's simpler bell.

Sometimes ring the bell instead of announcing "On your left".

The bike came with one. A tiny little black bell that goes ding ding. I think I've used it once. Then again, we have no MUPs nor bike paths around here and on the highway, car drivers generally can't hear it... The time I used it, I was away from home.
