In 2010 live expectancy at birth in the US was 76.2 years for men and 81.0 for women. Life expectancy at age 75 is another 11 years for men and 12.9 for women. That is, once you've made it to 75, you're going to live until 86 / 87.9 (m/f) on average. As you can see, the difference narrows with age as more men already died in larger numbers at younger ages (e.g. before 75).
