Words of wisdom Dnvr... We all rather suffer some pain then have the realization of never having the ability of feeling it again.

The sorry part is this. The nerves for motion and nerves for the sensation are in some cases independent and run on opposing sides of the spine ... so there are some people with paralyzing spinal injuries who are also in more or less constant pain. The worst of both worlds.

This stuff is high on the short list of things I wish I never knew. :(

Good thinking on your part, not moving from the start. Remember, we cyclists like pain. Imagine if you where a baseball player!
Do what the docs tell you, Get better soon. Good wishes being sent you way!

And BTW; How's the bike?
(somebody had to ask)

I used to laugh and say, " I'm a cyclist. We know how to suffer." Little did I know how little I knew about suffering. My Masi looks unscathed. When I came home and got a moment away from my gf (who has been hovering over me to a point of craziness) the first thing I did was to check on my Masi. I love that bike.

Sending you best wishes and prayers for a full and speedy recovery Bruce

Did the finger-toe check a couple years ago and was relieved when they moved. While waiting for the ambulance I asked how the bike was. Guess we are all a bunch of strange individuals to care so much about our machines.

Hope you have a good recovery.

FWIW the guys on my Ducati list would be doing the same thing.

This reminds me of the major role probability plays in our lives; both in the events themselves and the consequences. So, sooner or later people often have to face down the "why me" question. This adds to the mental challenges involved in healing and adaptation.

I found knowing that was very helpful.

Luck for a complete and quick recovery...whew...

Yeah, it's good thing the bike is ok... glad you still have a sense of humor. BTW, if she's hovering that much, it likely means that she's really interested in keeping you around.

I know this is true and I feel the same about her. It's just that she's making herself crazy trying to control every breath I take. Hopefully, she will find the balance we both need.

Suddenly, my Sciatica doesn't seem so bad now. Here's to a quick and full recovery.

I think the answer to the question "Why me?" is "Because. Now what are you going to do with it?"

Jseis 08-02-13 02:26 PM

Get well given the situation.

GFish 08-02-13 02:46 PM

That SUCKS!!

Really....very sorry to read about your accident Bruce. Mend quickly and learn to take it easy and enjoy the recovery.

I always tell the kids, accidents happen in a blink of an eye. Amazing how life takes an 180 degree turn when least expected.

All the best...

To the OP, thanks for sharing your story. It is tough to read but we all need to be reminded to appreciate every minute. Happy to hear you have all that support from your girl friend and that expect a good recovery.

North Coast Joe 08-02-13 03:42 PM

I don't post much anymore, but have to say I'm so sorry and hope the recovery is speedy!

jppe 08-02-13 03:49 PM

Really sorry to hear of the mishap. I'm sure it happened must faster than you expected. Looking forward to the day when you post things are now "normal"!

on the path 08-02-13 03:52 PM

So sorry to hear. I'm wishing you a full and quick-as-possible recovery.

otg 08-02-13 03:54 PM

Bruce, really tough to read. We all are aware this is a possibility, but your post hits hard. I live two towns from you, if I can help with anything please let me know.

Wow.
It hurts just reading this.
Positive thoughts coming your way from KY.

Monoborracho 08-02-13 04:33 PM

Best wishes for a speedy recovery from Deep in the Heart of Texas.

JanMM 08-02-13 04:59 PM

Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! Sorry to hear the news but glad to hear, as already mentioned, that you are perfectly able to tell us about it. And glad to hear you are moving forward.
The RN in me reminds you to increase fluid and fiber intake if you are taking strong pain meds. (Take 'em if you need 'em.)

Better than a halo, the brace or the other one.

Rowan 08-02-13 07:03 PM

Good luck with the recovery. Perhaps try to set targets that are achievable yet not easy.

You're fit and healthy (you have to be to mix it with the 1s and 2s) and that should help a lot in recovery.

Any idea of how long the healing process and rehab will take?
