Are Bicycles Time Machines?
A provocative little study has shown that when men of a certain age change their lifestyle (vegetarian, exercise, meditation), they get younger at the subcellular level. Here's a blurb from the BBC: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-24111357
If we ride enough do we lose eligibility for this forum?
For all those new 50+ cyclists: You don't just feel younger, you really are. Okay, maybe, kind of, sort of. I think over-reaching is justified in a good cause.

I helped the son unit off move into his university dorm last Sunday. All of a sudden, I feel very old .... down to the mitochondria.

Now that you mention it, I attended a wedding of a cyclist friend a week ago, and was mistaken for the groom's father.
Back to the BBC article ... so now I gotta worry about shorter telomeres too?

But yeah, your "biological" age will improve markedly by taking care of yourself.
I'm much younger, than I was 5 years ago. I'm not sure if I should post here as I'm 47 and a half. I find many of your threads interesting. You guys show me that I can continue to improve for a very long time!

I got 10 years younger just by shaving off my beard, which combined with my size was giving me a 'Santa Claus' vibe.

Maybe we are the normal ones and the other people are older than they need to be?

The fountain of youth is no secret, and it is sad that so many Americans lack the self-discipline to eat and exercise properly.
I do my cycling, weight lifting, and fast walking, and my wife still takes ballet lessons three times per week. We both have lots of octagenarians and nonagenarians in our respective family trees, so we figure we better take good care of ourselves, because we are likely to be around for awhile.

Ever read H.G. Well's The Time Machine? As described in the text, the device of the title is clearly bicycle-derived. Wells knew, but then he was a cyclist.
"Father and Nan and Jimmie rode their bicycles all over the countryside. They had picnics and they went swimming in a nearby lake. Father said that the exercise made him feel ten years younger. 'But it's lucky it doesn't make Nan feel ten years younger than she is,' said father, 'for then she wouldn't be born yet.' Nan said it made her feel ten years older than she was and at her age that was quite as good." Father's Big Improvements, 1936

Moved my younger daughter to Grad School in late July. Older daughter got engaged two weeks ago. Been out of town for a couple of weeks but sure that getting back on the bike will make me feel younger.

Q: You ride one of those fixed things, at your age? How do you do it?
A: Apparently, without any problem.

I got a nice compliment in the swimming pool recently. A very muscled 42 yo could not believe I was 31 years his senior, said I looked "great" and that he wished he could look, be and do what I do at 73.

Even when I was a Clydesdale, I looked younger than my age, but now that I'm down to 140ish, people say I look even younger. I have had people I hadn't met in years(who knew me well earleir as a clyde) not even recognize me. I had to tell them who I was. Loosing a lot of weight(110 lbs in my case) will change your appearance quite a bit.
