Where can I get one of those 36 speed bikes? dual drive rear hub + a triple crank .. cube numbers 10x3x3= 90 .. 6x3x3=54; 7~ 63; 8~ 72; 9~ 81 a 4x3x3=36 in '62 I made my S-A AW3, cubed .. 3x3x3 a 27speed .. |
The only reason I use a bike computer is to track miles. Speed is of no concern to me anymore. I track the miles because I am anal about chain and tire wear. I like to know where I stand and what products offer the results I am looking for.
Other than that, time is my measure for success on a bike. If I get an hour and a half a day, I am very happy. |
Cycle computer for me is to keep track of my distance and so I know what my annual mileage is--I set it back to zero on the first ride of a new year.

This is just a sad post, followed by a lot of sad comments. Because others don't do what you do, do you think for a moment that they aren't having fun?
Again, sad. Reading this stuff is not fun. Oh, and always make sure you use the age card. It never fails to impress. |

Please include your age when you talk about how bad you feel. I will be even more impressed.
What makes me saddest is the haunting fear that you won't be impressed. |

Friend's Dad , an artificial limb baker , back then, used 2_3 speeds , 2 chains..
2nd Hub up top of the seat tube had a 2nd hubshell mounted cog driving the wheel IGH Jack shaft method .. It worked too .. S-A makes that sort of hub now , we have adult trikes using those. |

Aren't those short, cold, wet days gloomy enough without starting the odometer at zero as well? Time to adopt a cycling fiscal year so we can all reset them in March or July when the riding is good and it is easy to get back up to exciting numbers (such as the numbers excite any of us).

Fortunately, this is a brand new topic which has never before been discussed on the 50+

My older brother (72) had a good but basic computer that broke and he rode without one for several weeks. He has made fun of my Garmin 800 for years, which I love. On a recent ride together, he kept asking about our pace, distance, etc. Guess what he is buying? A Garmin 800. I guess he's still retro since he's not getting the 810.
When riding with someone or in a group, I only pay attention to cadence and heart rate (I'm a heart patient). Riding solo, I play with it all...makes for a more enjoyable ride. Don't knock it until you've tried it. You can record everything, and still smell the roses. |
I wonder
I cringe when I put a six speed freewheel on my bike.
I have been known to use a Huret Multito on my front wheel. Thats high tech enough for me. And I like 27 x 1 1/4 wheels. |
Depends on your personality. I can't stand the gadgets. I spent some time with them & would prefer to train w/o. I ride for fitness, health & pleasure, now. The computers make it feel like work. Many find them motivational, though.
|
Now I'm depressed! To think that I have most of those gadgets and rode 7,700 miles this year and never had any fun riding. :wtf:
Edit: I forgot to throw my age in for affect; I'm 67. |

Anymore with bikes that can have 36 plus gears, and have riders that have cadence meters on their cranks, horsepower reading, pulse rate, GPS readouts and of course speedometers, does anyone just ride for the fun of it?
Since I will be 75 next month, I really dont care to be involved in all that information. Further I really dont care what anyone thinks about what I ride, where I ride, and how fast I ride. I just ride for the exercise, joy, and the fun of it. How many here do the same. Congrats on riding at 75, that's a big deal!! 36 gears? what the? I have a 20 speed but for what reason? I only got it because it's a new bike and they come that way today otherwise I don't need that many gears. I have older bikes with 10, 12, 14, (touring bikes with triples not included) and use to ride them up and down mountains in S Calif without ever thinking I needed another 10 gears or so. I don't buy into a whole lot of electronic crap either, GPS and wattage output is my least thing I would ever get, and besides a paper map is actually easier because their no buttons to push and screens to scroll. Some of the stuff you mentioned like cadence and especially HRM is only for those who wish to do better by monitoring the stats and knowing where their at for max workout. Even though I have that stuff I ride a lot without using any of it. But if I decide to go back into racing and join the Geritol Racing Crew (just funning) then I probably get more serious about all that HRM stuff, but for right now due to time constraints of having to work I ride mostly for fun, and immediately after I retire I want to take a cross country touring trip. After that I'll consider whether or not I want to race. Everyone has a different idea of what fun is to them. Riding for fun without all the restraints is great for a lot people, for others riding with technology to improve themselves and or see improvement is fun. Just depends where a person is at. I would say most of the time as of right now I ride for fun. |
this thread is too technical for me.
