My "New" LOOK 585

I'm 64, been riding since '73 and have always had either aluminum or steel bikes. My everyday bike for the last four years has been a 2002 Land Shark at 17lbs which I love. However, I recently ran across a 2008 Look 585 that had been built, put on display at a bike shop and never ridden. I have always read about the cult-like following of the 585 and when I saw this one being advertised, I pulled the trigger. It happened to be in my size (an XS) and I knew I probably wouldn't see another.

This is my first carbon frame, I've never even tried a carbon frame before this...because in my size (48cm) you almost never run across them. I removed all the components from another bike I had and built it with all Dura-Ace and DA wheels and hubs as well. It comes it at 15.3 lbs and......IT RIDES LIKE A DREAM. I had no pre-conceived notions and was prepared to be underwhelmed. Instead, I found the ride to be incredible. Yes, it is smoother and I can feel it...but not THAT much smoother than my lightweight steel. However the ride has a different quality and it's nice. This frame handles great, quick but not twitchy, is super comfortable overall and while I hate to overstate it...just feels like I have an extra gear (or two) on the hills. Some of this may be that overall, the shorter top tube and taller head tube just fits me better. Still, I just can't get over how great this bike feels and rides. I don't know if all carbon bikes feel this way...but now I know why there is a rabid group of people begging LOOK to make another run of these frames.

Good looking ride! Nice to have a bike you don't see coming the other way all the time.

Never ridden the lugged Look 585. I do love my 566. I have vintage (Columbus) steel, modern (Cannondale) aluminum and 2011 Look 566. All have their good and bad points. The 566 is my usual go to ride. Would like to upgrade the drive train to new SRAM Red or Force.

Glad your new bike exceeded expectations.

My steel bike broke so I transfered the parts to a Cannondale from the early 1990s. It's the "2.8" frame with cantilevered dropouts and 1.25" threaded, aluminum "sub-one" fork. I bought it new, rode it a couple of years, and it has been sitting around ever since.

I expected it to be harsh but was I surprised. It rides as well as my steel bike but it feels a whole lot more efficient.

I have only ever had a few bikes that, as the younger set often says, Jones for. Originally it was a Lapierre Scandium Xlite. Got one and built it up with Force groupo and drive set. I had to send the frame in for warranty work and they upgraded it to a CF Sensium 400 cp. Not a bad machine but not the same spirit as the Xlite. The only other two bikes I ever really wanted was a Tarmac and a Look. I finally built my Tarmac from wheels to groupo. The Look is still in the back of my mind. And if I had a deal like the op I would be willing to sleep on the sofa for months to bring it into the house.

I like the look of your Look! It sure looks bigger than an XS though. CF with the right mold/layup is amazingly good stuff. Enjoy.

Great job dialing it in.
I'll have to live with my carbon envy until the end of this model year.
Looking to score next August or September.
Happy riding!

Share your sentiments, though I'm on a 586. If you ever get a chance, try one (in comparison).

I sure like my 585, a good all-day ride.
