Old Dog...New Tricks

1 Attachment(s)
In 2-3 weeks my new bike arrives...my son, who does marathons and wants to do triathlons, inherits my "old" bike. Logic tells me I don't need nor deserve a bike like this, particularly at my age. It's likely not even the type of bike I should be buying. However, I figure the next decade+ (God willing) will be my last chance to "pretend" (a word I haven't used in a while)I'm still young!

Congratulation on the new mount.

You WILL enjoy it, but ditch the seat. Ask me how I know.

My Advanced SL is sooooo much fun.

O.K....how do you know? It looks good...what's the problem?

If you earned the money to pay for it, how can you not deserve it?

There is a small bit of guilt, in that a younger guy, with a lot more up side physical potential than a 63 year old, would probably be more deserving or suited, at least, to it. That being said, I'm not feeling too guilty or I wouldn't have ordered it. My understanding of the delay in getting it is that Shimano is a little behind on supplying the new Di2 Ultegra components, although that is just what I surmise from some other forum posts I have read.

I say, keep the old dog and give the new trick to the young son. Imagine what it would do for his triathlon results.

Wow, beautiful bike! Congratulations and yes, you will enjoy it, no doubt!

I'm 63 and I just got a new bike too (not as nice as yours) and to me, it's all good.

I realize saddles are a personal thing but this 63yo butt just couldn't get used to it.

Of course you deserve it (unless you financed it...cause the bank doesn't deserve it).
Only trouble with modern bikes, you are expected to be fast on it. If you are great but the old bike gives you an additional excuse if not :D (I have that excuse on my steel but not on my new bike now :()

Noble thought...but not going to happen, although he may one day end up with it. Plus, I'd have to spend an equal amount on my daughter.

Good point, and one I have thought about quite a bit. That's also one of the major reasons I decided not to go with the Propel SL 0 (price, ISP, 53/43 crank being the others).

That's what makes me so happy about getting the '13-SL3 when the wife told me to buy it. The bike is all I could ever want and don't mind the ISP, 39/53 or the fact that it's not Di.

That looks like an aggressive geometry. You must be very flexible.

Flexible in everything but my politics...seriously, I am in pretty good shape, and am very fortunate to be pretty much pain free. I ride about 85% of the time on the drop bars and have no problems with my neck or back. Plus, since I've gotten back into cycling, what little stomach fat I had has melted away.

rdtompki 11-27-13 05:04 PM

Assuming your closer to 50 than 150 what's to worry about. Just ride and enjoy.

zonatandem 11-29-13 10:24 PM

So watcha gonna do . . . wait 'til you get older??
Am only 81, and still ride 100+ miles a week.
Pedal on!
