I don't think the link you posted is working, Denver.

But it may be the same story I heard this on the radio this morning while having my oatmeal for breakfast. I just wonder what the long term impact will be. I know more than just a few people who have crooked ways of thinking about things. If the limit is 140, they'll say, "Well, I'm at 142 and that's not too much above the limit." As the limit goes up, I suspect their thinking won't change much, and they may be less careful with diet and exercise. Or, maybe I'm the one with crooked thinking.

Maybe more people will try losing weight and increasing exercise rather than resorting to meds. I realize that won't work for all, but it worked for me and others I know. I bet it would work for many who are taking the meds now.

My doctor stopped my lisinopril last month, said my BP was excellent and the resting HR was also great (56 that day.) That dc was my major goal along with losing 80 lbs so far. He agreed that my cycling and nutrition discipline were the key.

I think I have white coat fever. Every time I go to the doc to get my BP it is 140+. Taken a few minutes later or using another arm, it will be down 20 or more points. Last year, my doc had me monitor it often during the day, and sure enough ... come in through the front door, and it's 140+. Sitting down watching TV a half an hour later, it's 115. My cholesterol is usually above 200+ as well, so my doc had me take some tests to see what the general status of my circulatory system was. Result ... about like a 40 year old or less.

In my case, diet and exercise are not a problem. I'm in the 3 sigma category for my age group in terms of CV exercise, and my diet is actually very low in fat.

Both my doc and I aren't keen on medication unless it's shown to be necessary. On the other hand, my Dad passed from a massive heart attack at 67.

So .... after my last checkup, I decided to pony up for a CT angiogram and settle it once and for all. Ah the joy of the feebledom.

Tried the diet thing, made no difference. Take 160mg Diovan each day and do well. Don't touch salt if I can as it really messes me up in a very big way. If my pressure were at 140/ I would have serious trouble sleeping and have headaches all the time.

Here is the JAMA study: https://jama.jamanetwork.com/article....eid=1791497AMA I couldn't get the link to work without pasting it into the browser. If you are 60+ with good kidneys the new standard is no BP meds if 150/90 or below. I am going to stop the meds and see if I go over 150bpm. I have had low BP problems especially on long (100mi) rides with lots of climbing (12,000 feet) where I had to quit as I couldn't turn the pedals over. The problem was confirmed at the ER.

Same here. I've seen reports that this kind of "labile" blood pressure is somewhat of a bad sign. IOW, you can't say "I'm fine, I just have high BP when visiting the doc."

The Omron wrist monitor is very nice, and reportedly accurate. You can just slip it on and measure any time (such as while on the computer).

Here I've plotted vs. time of day, mainly just to spread the data out. The lower BP in the afternoon is probably related to taking it after a long bike ride.

BTW, I've been posting less because I got a Nexus 7, and prefer to sit with it in front of the fire rather than at the computer.

My Mom is approaching 90, and this will be good news for her. They keep trying to put her on new medicines, and mostly they've given her really bad reactions. In one case, it was really severe, where she became mentally confused and lost her energy to do anything. Toward the end, she lost her vision, and we tossed that medication and delivered a "I'm not taking this" ultimatum to Mom's physician, since she was being a bit insistent.

No medicine she's been on has really changed her blood pressure either, so I bet this study will be good news to her.

Last year at my doctor's office my BP was something like 120 over 75. At home it was much higher. She said to take it for a few weeks and check back. It always was higher, as in 150 over 84 to 90, no matter the time of day. The next visit show BP at the docs of only 120 over 75. I think my machine is off, which caused me undue stress. Or, I have a profound placebo effect from going to the doctor. She thinks it is the machine.

I think you need to get to know your doc better.
