I had one give chase on today's ride. I clocked the thing going 21 mph. It didn't last as long as some other dogs but I was impressed.

They have to be able to outrun cats... which appear to be able to hit 31 mph in a sprint.

In checking the highest top speed ever recorded for a Chihuahua I see it was only 9 mph... you should probably get your computer calibrated and maybe work on your sprints a little more.

The next time it could be a cat chasing you.

I was reading that they cat hit 15 for short distances. 21 might be an anomaly but depending on how big or should I say tall the particular Chihuahua is 20+ doesn't seem out of question. I do question the 31 mph cat speed however.

Nope. The top speed that common House Cats can attain, is indeed 30 mph.

Wow. Coyotes have a top speed of 43 mph. I have a reasonable chance of having an encounter with one of these, since I've seen them in my own back yard last year (probably because of the drought).

I don't know if there are any peregrine falcons in the area, but WOW! 200+ mph?

The only dog to catch up with me on the road was a dachshund, I was cranking downhill and downwind over 20MPH. He caught my pant leg after chasing me over 200 yards. I couldn't believe it.

I don't know what breed, but I had a small-ish dog come out after me once while I was riding my lowracer. Speed was probably at more like 15 mph. I was basically eye-to-eye with it. There it was, snarling and snapping, almost at my elbow; so I extended my arm and clonked it over the head with my fist. His feet came out from under him and he went down chin-first into the pavement. My buddy was behind me and saw the whole thing; it's become one of his favorite stories.

I never saw that dog on the road again.

Judging by the neighborhood I was riding in I doubt it was a pure bred.....maybe a "hybrid" bred for speed???

There is a pair of Border Collies behind a nice tight fence on a local ranch who seem to know the capabilities of my various machines.
When I come rolling along on my town bike they lope down and cruise along the fence line matching my modest pace. If I ride my CF bike they shoot out on an intercept course in full-afterburner to head me off as we go for the end of their property. They win.

Great dogs.

On Sunday I had a fast, serious interceptor (not chaser) come for me from a side yard. He was concentrating on cutting me off so hard, that when he got to the ditch at the edge of the yard, he plowed right into the slope beside the road at full speed. He still managed to get back up to speed and give chase for a few more yards, but I bet he has a sore shoulder this morning

This is a little off topic, but we were riding the bike path a year or so ago and came up on a small flock of Turkeys right on the edge of the path. Turkeys will run a long ways before taking flight, so we kept riding with the turkeys running on the edge of the path in front of the bikes (I was on a Catrike recumbent trike) and pushing the speed up slowly. The turkeys were eventually running over 16mph before they gave up the race and ran down the embankment towards the water of Lake Okeechobee...

Wiener dogs can run faster than their short little legs would lead you to expect they can. They are funny to watch when in full flight.

I have two and they give a great chase to a rabbit that visits the yard. Short burst, an easy 20 mph. They can't sustain it for more than 5 laps of a city yard though.

A coyote's favorite treat is a nice warm cat. My daughter's cat came up missing and most likely eaten. I saw a Peregrine soaring along overhead last summer. Rare sighting.

Had a cat run in front of me on the MUP the other day. Doing about 18 or so. I thought if I closed on him he would turn off, but he held his line pretty good. I didn't think "on your left" would work so good, so waited until eventually he realized getting off the path was probably his best option.

I got chased by a Scottie a couple of weeks ago. He caught me by surprise and I was cruising slowly at 10-15. He passed me, cut across the front of me, backed off then came around the other side of me and did it again. Then his "man" called him back.

There use to be this 3 legged dog who lived on a hill along one of my rides. Fast little bastard! He would wait for me in the ditch and spring out just as I would pass. He would nip at my heels all the way to the crest of the hill. He did more for my climbing ability than any coaching I ever had!

My Corgi does not quite hit 25 mph. I have had an old tired looking Rotwieller stay with me until 32. Lots of dogs can hit 40 mph.
