Talk about plunging into the rabbit hole. right now I'm a one note Charlie; I open with the Italian game, each and every time, and go fried liver whenever I can.
It works against the standard open and it seems to work against the Sicillian defense. Yesterday the guy used the French defense. I was unfamiliar with it and almost got my clock cleaned because of it. I'll study the French defense a bit this weekend.
And you think people's eyes glaze over quickly when you talk about gear ratios....

I can't play chess. I lose to everyone. I taught my Mom how to play, and after the third game, I could never win again. I always fall prey to the fools-mate every time. Needless to say, I just don't play that anymore. Sigh.

Well dayum. Tough night on the checkerboard circuit.

And one loss of a game I had played very well and just lost concentration, and for no reason. No booze, no distractions, just flubbed it. My opponent graciously thanked me for the favor

That is the interesting thing about the game. It's a true meritocracy. After kicking rookie ass for a few games, the site has popped me up to the next level, where I'm now hanging on by my fingernails most of the time.
I shall approach this as a cyclist. I need PEDs, now.

My family had to listen to me first yell Oh crap, then I can't believe he didn't see that move, it's a gift. Oh well. I'll take the points. But I'm not proud.

At 75 I am firmly in the do your own thing camp. I ride a bent bike and a tadpole trike. I always wear a helmet, I am clean shaven, and barely have what would pass as an aero belly. I do not wear Lycra shorts as they are a waste of money on a bent.
If you are fortunate enough to be in good health as I am, in a way it is great being old and retired. You can ride most any time you want, ride what you want, and dont really give a dam what others think! I am way past wanting to "fit in" or trying to gain the approval of others. My advice-----------do your own thing, and life is great.

Whoever said I'm not competitive got it wrong. I'm competitive. I just suck.
I woke up from a nap and decided that a good way to get the juices flowing was to play a game or two. I lost both because of sloppy endgame, and it ticked me off.
Then I went on a ride and thought I did really well on a Strava segment, only to see it taken away by some kid a third my age.
Life is hard, I tell you...

I say again----------------retirement is the freedom of a teenager in the summer between the 11th and 12th grade. If you have good health it is a great time of life. Do at least a little of what you always wanted to. Enjoy your grandkids, tell stories about how great you were.

I can tell you this. Even when you race -and win- against younger, healthier people you still won't get respect. Not a single one of the last three races I was in left me feeling I was being given any respect. While I won each race hands down none of the other racers even gave me a tip of the hat. In each case I ended up riding home without a word. I would think that the fact that I beat each of them in spite of the fact they had THREE wheels for speed....well...that should garner some respect. To add insult to injury they were all younger than I am, each probably a healthy 5 yrs old or so...and still they didn't stop to congratulate me. What is the world coming to? Rant over.
