Standover with shoes or without?

When considering standover would yoou measure with your shoes on or barefoot? I'm looking at a couple of All City bikes and am inbetween TT lenghts but the longer frames have a SO equal or higher than my inseam.

Thanks

ThermionicScott 09-04-15 12:39 PM

To me it's simple: how often am I going to ride barefoot? :)

AnthonyG 09-04-15 07:50 PM

Standover is nice but far from the most important fit requirement. Certainly not the way that I would size a bike. I'd be more concerned about seat tube angle @ the top tube length.

Thanks Yeah, I kind of expected those answers:-) So here are the spec's on the bike I'm looking at. All City Mr Pink and below are the Competitve Cyclist recomendations.

Of those two options definitely pick the larger size as being closest to you current bike. Mind you both have steeper seat tube angles (less saddle set back) than you current racing frame which is bonkers in my book. What are you trying to achieve with a new bike?

I'm looking for winter bike that can also do some gravel.

fietsbob 09-08-15 01:18 PM

shut off the computer and go do test rides in person ..

Id guess on the small side.. for gravel racing.

Great advice but it's tough to find a store with a variety of steel bikes in stock. I did ride an All City Spacehorse at Broadway Bicycle School in Cambridge MA but not the Mr Pink. I've also test rode a BMC Grand Fondo & Scott Solace20 the scott was an XS and felt too cramped. Scott didn't have a geometry chart on line to compare.

Seems you were joking, but the only time I don't ride barefoot is in the winter :) :p

Rock on!

I went through a barefoot phase a few years ago, can't remember where I read about it first. Still enjoy it once in awhile on grass, but I have a couple of hammertoes that get beat up if I do too much running on pavement. I've considered the surgery to straighten them out, but they don't cause enough problems otherwise.

What pedals do you use, then?

Ergon PC2 are my nice ones, and work great for barefooting. And since I bought another bike this year I tried out some really cheap ones, Avenir Comfort Pedals and they work fine as well but not quite as nice and ergonomic as the Ergons. I know I give up some amount of efficiency with platform pedals and no shoes, but for the most part that is pretty meaningless to me. However I am thinking trying to make some custom pedals using a carbon fiber foot-shaped plate to add at least rigidity back into the equation plus a minor increase in safety. Might be a winter project.
