Saddle type <----> body flexibility
 

I noticed that Fizik categorizes its saddles as meant for most flexible ("snake"), intermediate ("chameleon"), and least flexible ("bull") riders. I noticed this after picking up a $30 used Fizik saddle. Turns out it is one of the "meant for snake" models. So I am wondering: how would your flexibility influence the optimal saddle shape? Does it have something to do with what party if your pelvis is assumed to be contacting the saddle? I'm also wondering what sort of animal I am.

Perfectly flat saddles are for flexible people, because their hips can sit flat and they can still bend over just fine to reach the drops.

Non-flexible people have saddles that rise up at the back, tilting their hips forward and allowing them to also reach the drops more easily.

(That's my theory after looking at the fizik saddles for flexible/non-flexible people.)

In this context, "flexible" usually means that you can rotate your pelvis forward and flatten your back while maintaining a low road position. Rotating your pelvis brings the pelvic arch in contact with the saddle rather than the ischial tuberosities or intermediate structures. This greatly changes the saddle fit. Usually a narrower saddle with a different taper and roll-off is required.

Depends on your bike and style of riding.

People who have a bike with drop bars and have their bars set at or slightly below saddle height, will want a tapered, moderate fitting saddle. In the Brooks line, that would be a B-17/Flyer.

People who have a bike with flat or upright bars and have their bars set at or above saddle height will want a wide saddle so they sit on it with their rear end on the saddle. In the Brooks line, that would be a B-66/B-67/B-73 and B-133.

Saddle choice is personal and reflects your riding style and comfort preferences.
