If you want float, just get the Speedplay.
For Shimano, the float, is in part dependent on the cleats. Here is what I've found. SPD: SH56 (multirelease) cleats, 0° float SPD-SL:SH51 SPD Cleats, 4° float SH10 Red 0° float Personally, I'd use factors such as shoe style to choose between SPD and SPD-SL, rather than simply float.SH12 Blue 2° float SH11 Yellow 6° float |
stick with regular shoes and platform pedals , if Low cost is your highest priority.

I have been paying about $10 a pair for used SPD pedals, and they seem to have a lot of life in them if the bearings are ok. But the cost of shoes do add up. Winter shoes. Summer shoes. Oops shoes  |
I re engineered a Comfy Loose fitting shoe with a slot with an hour glass shape for angular float
that slot the whole width of the shoe . so stable , smooth . sole so it slipped in the toeclip pedal with a comfortable supportive isole .. With the help of a shoe repar Guy that worked with me in his shop behind the counter as we worked out the interchange between Ideas And standard techniques and Materials So when the shoes needed a little work , the shoe repair shop I went into on the road, understood how to fix them again.. |
You actually found a cobbler?

I didn't want to end up with less float and potentially give myself another problem. Where'd you find the SPD float info. I was looking on Shimano's site but could only find information on the SL float. |
Its a Public forum.. kid.
You actually found a cobbler? some where around the REI store neighborhood, or was, at the time 90's? more firmly established by now , perhaps also in the - drop it off and come back - mode that Most are using.. |

The SPD-SL info just came from a Google Internet search. I think I searched for: "spd-sl degree" The Data came from the Wiggle site, but I think other websites have it too. wiggle.com | Shimano SPD SL Cleats | Pedal Cleats |
You know that SPD-SL shoes aren't really walkable don't you? You only walk with SPD-SL shoes if you really have to for a few steps.
When riding then yes, SPD-SL are better. If you value walkability then stick with SPD. Anthony |
Thanks Clifford
