Need extra wide SPD shoes
 

I have foot problems, and I need an extra wide SPD shoe. I tried on size 49 shoes in a couple of bike shops, and they're too narrow. I would wear a size 50 if it existed, but I don't think it does, and bike shops are not willing to order large sizes just for me to try them on.

Is there an SPD shoe that offers copious extra room? I need to wiggle my feet around. I'm tightly bound around the toes in the shoes I've tried on.

My feet are the length of a size 11 (European 45 or 46), but even the size 49 shoes are not big enough for me.

Suggestions?

Lake CX 'wide' models?
There are two or three spd models (the cheaper ones).
You can check out the shoes through the Lake website.

All I can suggest is measuring your foot carefully, and cross-referencing that against the recommended shoe size on the Lake website.

Otherwise, if you can find a shop with spd Lake 'wide's, in your size, then you're good to go.

I've had too many ill-fitting shoes. I have to try them on to buy them. I know Campmor carries Lake shoes, so I'll stop by there as well as visiting more bike shops.

My Lake's always have to be loosened...

Will a road shoe work?

The Shimano RP3 (or rp5 or rp9) is like the only cycling shoe I've ever worn that I literally forget it's there. Mine's a 45E (or 44E) can't remember, but the E is obviously the wide. I *think* Shimano has some guarantee where if you buy them and aren't happy, you can swap them within X amount of time...maybe look into that.

I'd suggest buying online from somewhere with a good return/exchange policy.

I was looking at these Sidi Genius Fit Carbon Mega Shoe - Men's | Competitive Cyclist last night. they have sizes up to 52.

I had an ankle fusion last year and my left foot (hey that was that movie) has a protrusion on the right side and b/c of overall swelling makes it wider than my right foot. I'm considering Speedplay pedals. Im curious as to what type of pedal you use.

i wear xx wide shoes and i tried all that my LBS had in stock. the ones i found that worked for me was the lake 160 cx wide. i bought one size up and there perfect for my feet. i have trouble wearing regular shoes and so far new balance are the only shoes i can wear. i just did 38 miles and the shoes felt great. i'm a novice rider with under 3 weeks of riding but shoe comfort has always been an issue with me, i have CMT and foot / shoe comfort has been an issue all my life. next time i need cycling shoes i'll go with the carbon lakes but i was afraid to buy the more expensive carbon shoes as i'm not sure if i'll this is just a fad i'm going through or a new life long hobby. so far i love the sport but the carbon shoes were a bit more than i had in the budget.

Almost all manufacturers offer wide versions. Having said that, you're probably not going to find any stocked at your local store. Order online with a good return policy.

Zappos has a great return policy -- my wife and I love them.

Like you, [MENTION=152773]noglider[/MENTION], I have extra wide feet, so for my last pair of SPD shoes, I ordered a couple different sizes at once and returned all but the pair that fit best. :thumb:

I eventually bought some Mavic shoes in size 48. That's about the biggest size made in most bike shoes. They barely fit. Then Thursday, I was carrying them to work in a tote bag while riding the subway and also wearing my regular backpack. I forgot the bag with my shoes on the subway. $160 down the drain. Ouch. I filed a lost and found claim with the MTA, and they have a nice web page for that. I got an incident number. But my chances of recovering are not good.
