Stem Change For Comfort On Specialized Diverge
5”2” woman wants to be more comfortable on Specialized Diverge Aluminum Bike. Hi all. I just bought a 2025 49cm Specialized Diverge Elite E5 - Aluminum Frame. I will be using this as a road bike.
Specs for this bike show a stem length of 60mm and the printing on the stem itself shows 60mm x 7 degrees. Specs for the bike also show a reach of 365 mm. I wanted to sit more upright and (maybe?) a little less reach so my bike fitter sold me this adjustable stem: Kalloy Adjustable Stem AS-820 Length 110mm, Barbore 31.8mm, Steerer 28.6 mm. The adjustment is set at the midpoint of 30. The midpoint adjustment of 30 gives me the height I like, but the reach is too far away. I think if the length were the same as the 60mm which was standard on the bike, and I could get up as high as the adjustable bars are set, I would be happy. I realize that adding more height to a 60 cm length stem is going to effectively shorten my reach. I don’t know the math on this, but if it shortens just a little bit, I think it might be good. So, a couple of questions: 1. Can you suggest a stem that might satisfy my needs? 2. The bike salesman/fitter told me I could not add spacers to the stock stem that came with the bike. Do you agree? 3. Are there other solutions? Thanks for taking the time to read this! https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/s...70PktRSTmnjBBQ |
If you turn your Kalloy stem up to the 45 degree maximum, the handlebars will be higher and the horizontal reach the same or less than a 60mm stem.
Otherwise, you want a steep rise stem of a longish length so that length gives you height. You need to stay with the type of stem that has a visible top cap because you have a non-metal fork steerer tube. So something like this: https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...d443ba803f.png This 40 degree stem at 105mm length has an identical horizontal reach to your 6 degree 60mm stem. This web page doesn't work with a stem that adjusts from the middle like your Kalloy, but you can visualize different stems by length and angle with this tool: Stem Comparison Tool | yojimg.net |
Thank you Kontact
Kontact Thanks for your help. I'll take a look at that Kalloy stem and look at the 45 degree mark. It might raise the bar higher, which I don't really want. And thanks for the 105mm 40 degree stem suggestion and the stem comparison tool. I'll check them out.

Atlas Shrugged. Thanks for the bar suggestion. They look rad and I like having more space to carry stuff because I don't travel light. I went to my lbs today have ordered a 60mm stem with a 40 degree rise. It puts me inbetween the stock Diverge stem and the adjustable stem. Fingers crossed, I think (hope) I like it
