State Bicycle Contender

Hi everyone, I wanted to get a fixed gear free style bike originally since I've been bmxing for a while but then I decided that I should just use it as a normal bike to travel to work and college. I wanted a bike that looks good and rides well. I don't need a bike with gears since I have one my dad gave me, a carbon fiber Eddy Merckx so I know its a good bike but I don't know much about fixed gear bikes or anything outside of bmx bikes to be honest. The State Bicycle Contender looked good and wasn't made out hi ten steel so I was just looking around to see if anyone with it could tell me how it is.

No, I'm 20 and in a community college until December when I go to boot camp. Is there a problem?

Seriously, wtf is your problem dude? I posted my first thing on here yesterday:
https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...Foot-Clearance
At least the dick responses I got had the information I wanted (i.e. "Unfortunately, given the geometry of your track frame, there is nothing you can do besides get a FGFS frame.")

This response, on the other hand, provides no information except that the responder is a really funny guy with lots of cool friends and pleasure to hang out with. The guy wanted to know about FGFS and you questioned his intelligence. LOL! Hilarious bro!

To the original poster, since you do not want a FGFS (as I understand your post), you may want to post on the more general Single Speed Fixed Gear forum since they may have more information. Personally, I really like the way the FGFS State Bicycles looks and there are not as many other options for FGFS. But if you just want a commuter bike that looks good and rides well, you have a hell of a lot more options. What I would do is go here: https://www.myfixedgear.net/
Then flip through those, get an idea of what look you like, read comments on the bikes that catch your eye. After a while, you'll develop a better understanding of what you want.

This forum would be really helpful if people did not automatically respond to questions like this by being dicks. I realize how cool people feel by making other people feel stupid, and I realize that being a dick does make you an super sick biker. In real life, almost every single person I have met that is into any kind of biking is really cool, but it's probably because they don't know what they are talking about. One day, I hope to meet these super sick ******* bikers. I can only imagine how much skill they have.

Hi OP.
ignore the dick quoted above. I'm a 42 year old exec that's been riding bikes all my life and have a state contender. I prefer the constant effort mixed with the sheer terror of a Fixie and don't look good in Lycra so go fixed. Anyway, I love the contender but had to make a couple of changes. Get a new lock ring as the one that comes with the bike has the consistency of cream cheese and is prone to slipping. Also, swap the chain for a better one while you're down there (I went with a SRAM). Not essential but it makes a hell of a difference. The 48:16 ratio is a bit tough on anything but the flat plus an even/even ratio is difficult for skids. I'm going to swap cogs to a 48/17 ratio which will be a bit lighter and easier to stop. All up with around $50 in tweaks you've got something really special. All up the bike is quiet, responsive, bullet proof and insanely fast. Good taste buddy.
