Your tires should be pumped to the required amount and the tire should not have wear or tear. Your brakes should be in working condition. You should have all your spokes. If you are missing any of these

Maybe install some brakes so you can stop. :twitchy:

There are not any 5000 pound Buicks on a velodrme track, there are on the street. :innocent: Just saying.

start by lowering your ratio. I started with a really high ratio and it took me a really long time to pull off a skid stop

i cant skid , and i feel its because of my gear ratio ....but i have brakes i use on both front and back.

What gear ratio's make it easier to skid? Also just a side question, has anyone ever tried to skid with a belt drive? Curious about how that would work

Can you skid on any gear ratio? i have a ****ty fixed gear off of craigslist and dont know if im not pushing hard enough or my gear ratio is too ****ed up... Also i have foot retention

You can skid regardless of your gear ratio or bike or pedals. All it takes is poor wiping and you will have a nice brown stain in your undies in no time!

try Michelin Dynamic Sport or Thickslick, they are the best skidding tires on the market

Technique ; weight off the rear wheel ie. lean forward on handlebars, head and shoulders will be over the front wheel, crotch on the stem, lock up your legs, jam your thighs against the handlebars...

If you don't get your butt off the saddle, too much weight will be on the rear wheel and this will wear out the tire at a faster rate.

I used to do it sitting on the saddle when I was little, but now I realize that my weight is too much to do a skid stop while sitting on the seat.

I really don't think the gear ratio matters.
I know people who skid stop on gearless bikes too.
It's not impossible, but I agree that it might be much harder.

I don't see the point of making a thread, practice is the only thing that helps. Get off the computer go outside and keep trying it will happen.

the gear ratio matters greatly. Not that some can’t skid on a high gear ratio but it matters...alot. Not just for skidding it is the single most important character of the ride after frame material imo. Order of importance-Start with steel then...
1)gear ratio
2)bar type
3)saddle
4)wheelset
5)tire size
6)pedals/retention
