2014 Dahon Mu P8 review

I just a dahon mu p8 obsidian folding bike and put 96 miles on it in two days, i will get a pic of it as soon as i can. It handles really good and accelerates pretty well. I will keep you up dated. To the other dahon owners how do you like your folding bike?

Update: 315+ miles, it's going great, the brakes are breaking in and the gears I am getting use to, they are not good for climbing though.

Don't have one yet...but I'm curious how this compares to the tern link c7 you had great updates on.

My first folder was a tern link C7 and it was a great bike with 7 speeds and 1,400 miles but i sold it sadly. I did one century on it and it handles well. The second folder Dahon Mu P8 is a few pounds lighter with lower gearing and i like it, this one i am going to keep and try to beat my old mileage record for a folding bike. They were both black with silver.

Update: 500+ miles in 7 days new record for me. The bike is doing great, the tires are show alittle wear and steering column has a bit of play in it. It is a fun little bike, i do need the front chain ring to be smaller for hills.

Update: 630+ miles, the bike is doing great. I have done a century on it from san jose to San Francisco and back. The rear tire had a flat a few days ago, it was hard to get the wheel out of the frame because of the backwards derailuer(not a good design). The brakes are still working good, it shifts properly. Besides that i like the bike pretty well, i would probably change a few things like the twist shifter for a trigger shifter, and skinnier tires like 1-1.5 inch with less rolling resistance. Till next time.

I'm new here, so I hope I'm in the right place. I try to bike to anything within 10 miles--work, church, doctor, library, etc--if I'm not under time compulsion. I'm about to buy my first folder, and what concerns me most is speed. I've been riding a clunky 3-speed that I can cruise about 12 mph on level, but that's too slow. I test-rode a Novara Flyby 7-speed and a Tern Link D8 at REI, but they didn't feel any faster. I can start in top gear on both of them. Is there an affordable folder out there that will allow me to cruise at 16-18 mph? BTW I'm 63, 5;9" and weight 225 lbs. It's pretty level here, so I don't need a lot of low gears.

Update: 764+ miles, today I rode around the south bay and it was fun. The bike is doing good but developing play in the steering column. The tires are wearing in pretty good, the brakes are getting thinner, the chain is stretching. I bought a rear rack (topeak), and Avenir Panniers to turn it in to a long distance touring bike.

I got too many bikes,, my month old or so Dahon P8 has less than 75 miles on it I bet. Still,, It's nice to have a bike with me even for short 2 or 3 mile rides.

Update: 871+ miles, today I went from San Jose to Menlo park and back to Palo Alto 40 mile ride. I switched to my road bike for now and put the Dahon in the garage. It's a great bike. In 2 weeks I had this bike and put over 870 miles on it.

That's some serious mileage in just 2 weeks! Proof that folders are serious bikes too. Perhaps not quite as fast as a roadie... But double the fun! Is your face still frozen in a grin?

That's very cool to put so many miles on a folder. I have been commuting for over 6 months on a folder too. A customer built Dahon P8 like with 9 gears and 20 inch wheels. I have done about 1600 miles on it. I have changed tyres to skinny (schwable one 23x406) but not because original worn out just for some extra speed.

Update: 932+ miles, today I rode 61 miles from Palo Alto to Belmont city and back to San Jose. I changed the front chainring from 53t to 39t , what a difference in acceleration and climbing. The bike has panniers full of food and water with pump and supplies about 35-40lbs total. Stay tuned!!!

Update: 1185+ miles, today i rode from palo alto to menlo park and back to san jose. I noticed some play in the steering column when you rock it back and forth. Also i tightened up the brake pretty good. The tires are half way bald. Also my bike computer went nuts and giving my different speeds or nothing, so i am going to switch to a cycling app for the iphone and get a mount for it.

Perhaps you should attend to the frame/steerer problems before you have a bad accident .. hate to bite pavement on your birthday...

no kidding
looks like the little setscrew for the Teflon block needs a 1/8 of a turn ....
( don't tighten the two allen bolts which hold the plate all the way !!! that plate needs to be able to slide back when you open the lever !!! )
and don't overtighten the lever -- plastic block either... otherwise u will break the block ... ( I have some exta ones )
a very small adjustment will do the trick

Update: 1424+ miles, i did a 103.1 mile century from san jose to Union city and back with a few detours. The weather was 52F cloudy with moderate winds. I used the "mapmyride" app in sleep mode and it lasted over 9 hours and the battery was a 9% at the end. I started at 6:30am and finished at 5:30pm with breaks. No problems so far.
