Folding pedal availability?
 

While on vacation in Florida last month, we (three of us) bought some bikes to toodle around on. One of them was an old Dahon Getaway (single-speed, coaster brake). I did a little investigation at the time and concluded it probably dates from sometime in the '80s. We acted dumb and boxed it up for the return flight home (just a few inches larger than the total dimension, but a bit under the weight limit), then checked it as baggage.

One of the fold-up pedals (right side, I think) had been replaced with a generic plastic rat-trap type pedal. How hard will it be to find a replacement? Sorry, no pix at the moment. Been busy with a house move and am only now just starting to think again about bike stuff. I'll snap a picture of the existing fold-up pedal when I have a moment. I've seen the MKS Ezy pedals, but wow, they are pricey (more than I paid for the bike).

sorry things are not priced as low as you wish they were and you judge things based on having gotten a really cheap price on a bike .



My Bromton's folding pedal is even more expensive , but when I sent the company a picture showing stress cracks in the aluminum part holding the bearing,

a new one came by Mail from England.

Why the abuse? I asked about the availability of folding pedals suitable for the bike I have. Yeah, I didn't pay much for it, precisely the reason why MKS Ezy pedals would be inappropriate for it. I think MKS pedals are the bees knees, but they are definitely overkill for this bike. This is the first folding bike I've ever owned. Pardon me for not knowing the terrain before posting a question.

I do like the mks we sell... but for just toodling around the folders are hard to beat ... and of course much cheaper.
We like everyone else sells only pairs ....
they all have axle dia of 9/16 .... maybe just maybe the old very old dahons have 1/2 ( like the bmx one piece cranks )
but I bet on the regular size

My Dahon came with Wellgro folding pedals. They are OK but after a season I replaced them with the MKS EZY folding pedals. The Wellgro pedals didn't feel very secure and I'd had a few occasions when they slipped on me. The MKS pedals feel very secure.

Lots of folding pedals on ebay at reasonable prices. I picked up Wellgro Quick release pedals for less than $40 shipped. I like how those are out of the picture when moving the bike around. One less snaggable protrusion.

Like others have mentioned, search Amazon or eBay. I'm soon to be looking for removable pedals for my TernJoeP24. The non-removable pedals are solid but bulky.

I tend to replace stuff that breaks with better stuff. Original is not always best. Assuming the Dahon is original, the pedals are 35 years old--- a long span for what is basically a weight supporting hinge. FWIW, I have 2 Schwinn Loops for takealong bikes on trips. I've had to get new pedals for one of them (mine) after the first ride. The one my wife rides is still ok, though they both came with one folding pedal (right side, on the outside when the bike is folded) and one nonfolding. The cheapness can be staggering.

I got these sunlite folding pedals on Amazon last year for $15 and they work fine. The shredding on the end was from a wreck on cement earlier this week.

The worst part about getting new pedals was getting the old ones off. I bent my bike tool trying to remove them myself and it took my local incompetent bike shop two days to get them off.

Don't let the gear snobs get you down. They're compensating.

I have given up on folding pedals. Ok on a rarely used bike, but they are not durable, even the expensive ones(with the exception of the ,imo, horrible riiding brompton and the flexy dibalsi, which are durable).

I use detachable only now and have the added benifit of swopping to cleated detachable quickly.

The first thing I did when I bought my folder was pull off the folding pedals. They were so floppy that they weren't comfortable to ride.

I'd try some of the pedals with break apart spindles (MKS?) However, for now I just installed a pair of my SPD pedals which seem small enough that it doesn't seem like I need the folders anyway.

If I could just remember where I put those folding pedals, I'd send them away ;)

There have been threads on the folding sub-forum where I have read some of the regular folder commuters riders refer to the folding pedal as "consumables" .

IMO, It depends on what your gonna do with the bike. If your gonna ride it alot but "speed of fold" is not critical, I would consider the some nice removables, such as BHKYTE suggested, MKS or Wellgo QRD are very nice. (I find the MKS slippery)

If its a "good old bike" for occasional, casual use, I definitely would consider a cheaper folding pedal.

I just ordered the MKS EZY MT-E DETACHABLE MTB Pedal off of Amazon. Solid removable pedals.

I've got over 5,000km on MKS FD-7 Folding, and they aren't showing signs of wear yet. Not floppy in anyway, though I am not the most powerful cyclist.

Thanks for all the responses. It appears I have plenty of choices (most/all of which I was unaware). I still haven't figured out exactly into what niche the folder will fit, but I am leaning to it being a handy get-around-town bike for a place we have in South Haven, MI. In that capacity, it will likely be used by more than just me, so true folding pedals would seem to be more practical than detachable pedals. If any of my kids ever used the bike, it would only be a matter of time before I came out to find a pedal missing. (I'm sure those of you with kids will understand.)

Lol! I have 4 kids, and they have their own bikes. Mine are off limits. Except my Schwinn,...my oldest son asked me for it so it belongs to him now.

On topic: it definitely sounds like a nice set of decent quality folding pedals would be best. Keep us posted on what you choose!
