Compatible Handle Posts for Dahon Boardwalk S1
 

I know the forum gets a lot of questions about Dahon Boardwalks.

I haven't ridden a bike in years, but decided to get myself a folder because I moved to another town with good public transport (so I can fold it and take it on the bus with me).

For this reason, I bought myself a used Dahon Boardwalk S1 because I didn't have the money for a Brompton or Bike Friday Tikit.

I've had a lot of problems with the Boardwalk, but the biggest one is depressingly bad. It's the handlepost locking mechanism; the thing is wobbly as hell and the "safety" on it is a cheap piece of plastic that doesn't even hold the lock down properly.

I bought a new one and installed it to see if it was just a problem with the original part, but no, it's still very wobbly. I feel like the handlepost with break right off if I pull back even moderately hard.

What kind of aftermarket handleposts (nonfolding or with a stiffer lock) could I install on the Boardwalk without elaborate modification?

I included a picture of the lock. What's holding the handlepost in is simple a very large bolt screwed tight.

I'm guessing the bolt pulls up a wedge..
looks like there is an adjustment between the knob and the barrel nut ..
that hex stock piece looks threaded

Yeah, it's threaded. I've tried that already, if I thread it too tight the hinge will not open (and it's still as wobbly as ever).

Could just be what you get for what you were willing to Pay. Analog to YGWYPF.

could be the reason the last owner decided to let it go.

One of my buddies bought one brand new and it has the same problem. Also, I bought that locking mechanism off thorusa (the old one broke) so it's got to be the way the bike and lock are designed, not that it's bent or compromised.

There's a bike blog where this guy put a Dahon Mu handlepost on his boardwalk s1, but he also had to modify/replace the forks and do some other stuff. I just want to know if there's an existing handlepost I can buy and put in the place of the dahon boardwalk handlepost.

Non folding? willing to hire a fabricator? If the bottom half of the hinge does use a Wedge, a quill tube with a wedge can be made,

then in the reverse of a seatpost another tube fitting over it, with a pinch bolt.

then put a threadless stem on the top of the tube.

Universal Cycles sells a bunch of different folding handleposts, but I have to agree with the overall sentiments about the Boardwalk not being the very best example of folding bicycle craftmanship. No need to go to a Bike Friday either. Dahon and others have folding bikes priced higher than a Boardwalk and less than a Tikit.
