Need help with Tern Eclipse P9
 

Hi,

Please help with Eclipse P9.
I am disassembling and do not know how to put forward gears. Where I have to put distacers (6)?

There are 3 choices where to put (6):

1. First choice: (6) is between (2) and (4)

Which is the right solution?

My guess is no spacers at all. Chain guard on outside shoulder and chainring on inside shoulder. I suspect that the spacers were used because the chainring bolts are too long. So I pick option number four. (Yes, I understand they were there before but it doesn't make it right). You will need, if I am correct, shorter chainring bolts.

If the chainring bolts are indeed too long, then I would put the spacers closest to the frame, as to only take up space and let the chainring sit on the shoulder.

Of course I could be wrong so hopefully someone else will chime in here and assist.

It's possible that the spacers (washers) were used because the chainring bolts are too long like blakcloud said. The other option is that the spacers were used to adjust the chainline by bringing the chainring further or closer to the frame than the normal position.

I would recommend to visually inspect your chainline with the 3 options and pick the one which gives you the straightest chainline. Try to place your chainring in a position so that an imaginary line in the plane of your chainring bisects the rear cassette in the middle of the cassette like the diagram attached. That's probably the best place to put your chainring.

Dang, I tried to edit and deleted instead. Let's try this again.

First option. That's a single-speed crank, the backside shoulder is too shallow to support a chainring. It's an odd arrangement to have a chainguard outboard of an outboard chainring, but Tern had problems with dropped chains from the single ring on bikes with rear derailleurs. I suspect this was the quick fix.

Thanks for posting the Tern response, who would have thought? Certainly looks like a kludge to me but as long as it works.

I gotta admit, I never would have thought of adjusting a chain line on a singlespeed by mounting a chainguard in the chainring position, then spacing the ring into thin air. Hey, whatever works!

I've lost 1 of the 5 chainring bolts (full set) M8x12.5 for my Tern Eclipse P9.
All bolts are visible in the first post of this topic.
I can't buy them in my country and I can't find analogues either. Can you help me?
