E-bikes is THE growth sector. B. wants a piece of the pie. The biggest piece is in Asia and growing.
If they didn't do this, I think they were on a path that would relegate them to Moulton status. A.R. =A.M. Except B is public, therefore we see what we see. They are attempting to leverage their branding in this expanding market. I think we can presume that their E-bike will still be a high price niche product just like their folder. Blah Blah Blah, its a capitalist plot. No doubt our planet needs more E-Bikes instead of cars for future transportation. |
As long as it's an option, customers are free to get a standard Brompton or an e-Brompton, and everybody's happy.
Then, once they finally release that e-Brompton, if they could find an IGH that offers the same range as the clumsy 2x3 solution without adding weight + size so that we don't have to resort to a third-party solution… |
So in the local group rides in the Philippines quality of bike was definitely an issue. One of the guys had a Carbon frame--with a US brand---and was quite proud of it.
Premium Brands are in my opinion even bigger in much of southeast Asia than in the US where they is huge. I believe cyclists in the know most anywhere will realize that the Brompton is an expensive bike. This trickles down quickly... I had not thought about folding bikes being harder to steal. |

Because of the way the rear wheel folds "in plane" under the frame, that would mean a new bike no? New front fork, new rear triangle, new frame.

Mighty Velo is the Singapore authorised distributor/retailer for Brompton. Thanks for the correction. I converted the funds using Google and this is the approximate in US dollars. 6R ------ $1,860.00 USD 3L--------$1,645.00 USD 2L-------$1,573.00 USD 1E-------$1,359.00 USD |
The Singapore pricing isn't reflective of worldwide prices to to correct.
They add in a 7% Goods and Services Tax as well as approximate cost of shipping into Singapore from competitively priced markets. So at the bare minimum, you should be deducting about 10~15% off those prices in most "open market" countries. |
My first post
Quite a few London commuters and others particularly in the South of the UK use the Brompton as part of their journey into work to save money ..... savings on Bus and tube fares in one year can easily be greater than the cost of a Brompton - their Bike commute is usually flat In the UK there is a "Cycle to work" scheme promoted by the Government that to put it simply saves UK income taxes, (payroll taxes) when you buy a Bike up to £1,000 - if you buy a Bike under the cycle to work scheme the cost is reduced by between 28% to 40% The rules of the scheme limit the initial cost of the Bike to £1,000 and no more ....... you can just about buy a Brompton for £1,000 In such cases Bromptons are bought for 1). The small fold, 2). The weight and, 3). the ability to be effectively carried on public transport and stored easily at their place of work ....... I think that this was one of the Founder's main objectives |
If you want to buy a bike that costs more than £1,000, can you still take advantage of the C2W scheme and pay the extra out of pocket ?

Having a competent management staff running the company why shouldn't the founder enjoy their retirement with income secured.

Winfried, paying the extra over £1,000 is a bit of a grey area as technically speaking the Scheme restricts the amount to £1,000 - but apparently there are quite a few dealers that will let you do that, i.e. pay the difference.
Your employer has to be a member of the Scheme - best to read the rules, which are quite straightforward and available on the internet. |
Given the ever changing limits on batteries (especially LIoN) on airplanes, I'd think an ebike only strategy could be iffy for Brompton.
diode "The new breed of cyclist in the UK seems to use cycling as a means to get a "work out" without having to go to the gym, so I'd imagine going for an electric bike would be counter productive." Studies suggest that you get a similar workout Quikbytes:Same Great Workout, Just Faster and More Fun (for example). Speaking from personal experience with a Stromer ST-1, I'd say they are spot on. Mostly the difference is how fast I get where I'm going (my physical effort is more or less constant); in addition it greatly increases my days ridden (due to the time savings). In fact, I got rid of my car, I do all of my commuting by bike. Currently, I use a Dahon when traveling but planning to upgrade to something better (downtube mini, Brompton, or ?). |

I am not saying that this is good or bad, but when Venture Capitalists get involved and shareholdings change, companies are usually driven (mainly) by the profit motive and the return for investors. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next few years and if indeed the company is "sold" on to achieve financial gains for the current shareholders, (the original founder included). Brompton are the biggest Bicycle producers in the UK ...... but they are a minnow compared with the Far Eastern producers ........ and many good UK Brands have been purchased by such over the past years. |
Before 2000, I found , when visiting, (88 , 91) decentralized bike companies , frame building shops and retail combined
Making the bikes they sold in their shops.. for the riders in their area.. Individually small, but combined, making a lot of bicycles, |

At the start of a group tour in 88 we found FW Evans made steel lugged frame bikes in their London shop, one person came to the trip start anticipating a bike purchase, and we found it.
91, as I prepared to take the north sea crossing ferry I felt a need to re locate my film camera gear bag to an over the wheel rack, there was a small workshop builder, there who did the job in a couple days.. .... |
