...or, if you can find the parts, you could look for a Kickflix caddy to mount on the seatpost...

...then mount a Tern Kanga Rack on the caddy...

...and then a drybag of your volume choice on the rack, looking something like this...

In the front, mounted on the handlebars, I'd recommend an Ortlieb Ultimate bag, again mounted on a Kickflix caddy (provided with the bag). The Ortlieb Ultimate bag is not cheap, but they are well made & waterproof, and it turns into a neat shoulder bag for when you are walking around town and need to carry some bits. Particularly good as a walk-around bag with a small camera inside.

The Klickfix caddy and bag/rack mounts are solid, withstanding the roughest of shakes and shudders, yet easy to mount and dismount. Recommended.

My advice would be to buy the Speed D8, with fenders, lights and a rear rack to carry two Ortlieb front pannier bags, these are the ones that would allow you to pedal (Ortlieb rear pannier bags are too big for such a bike). I believe this would give you 2 x 25 litres capacity.

Best place to carry luggage on a 20" folder is in the front. With the right front rack you can carry two medium or big panniers if you want. Best weight distribution on the bike plus it "calms the steering down".

The handlebar mount is secured only with zip ties? wont it rotate under load? (The seatpost mount looks good.)

Yup this is genius. It seems we think almost alike. I'll go for shoes myself and have you tried UNIQLO underwear? Yeah, it's a weird topic to discuss but they have this Air series that's cheap and wicks away the moisture. Rolls up to nothing.

Also agree about the rain. If it rains, I get wet or I stop. This trip is about slowing down, not looking at my watch. And it's not rainy season.

Rain is 'for sure'. :D
In the tropics, the good is that even if you get wet, you don't really get very cold and often the exercise from the cycling will be good enough to keep you warm.

Having a pair of sandals (or just using them all the way) is good since the shoe can get wet.

W/o the need to camp (no such thing as camp grounds in M'sia), I carry my stuff about the same way as Abu_M.

No, it is not secured by zip ties, but rather by a lined steel cable that wraps around the stem and steerer and is clamped in two places inside the caddy. It is secure and does not rotate under the rated load of 3kg.

Now, I vaguely remembered that someone has asked the same question a while back and you replied. Sorry. :o

This, I think, is what I'll do. Panniers just don't do it for me, not sure why. I don't know if I have time to get all specific brands you mentioned, but handlebar bag on the front for electronics, everything else in the rear is the way to go for me.

Have you visited/talked to Van's Urban Bicycle in Petaling Jaya? They might have these bits.

Hi all,

I'm starting a several month-long bike tour around Malaysia and Indonesia in about a week. I don't have a bike.

It's a long story but the bottom line is I'd like to quickly buy a Dahon and outfit it with panniers. I won't be camping or cooking along the way so the weight will be minimal. I think rear panniers should do it. My rides will be more or less on good roads with some inclines but nothing crazy.

My problem is that I am overwhelmed with the choices here in Kuala Lumpur. There aren't the same Dahons as there would be in a western country but there are still many Dahons with many products numbers. I was hoping that someone might tell me which of the following would be ideal for touring around. All have 20 inch wheels. All bikes are between 450 USD and 550 USD I've narrowed it down to these:

Vitesse D8
Curve D7 Akibo
Boardwalk D7
Brizda D8
Speed D8 (I think my favorite)
MU D8
SUV D6

When I do Western review site searches I sometimes see these referred to as P8 and not D8 but that's not what they say around here.

Any help would be great!

-Dave

I'd suggest you check out different brands as well like fnhon and crius and doppelganger. For the same money they might be lighter and have the options of having disc brakes and double chainring setups. I'm a member of a facebook bike group from the Philippines, and the options for around the same money are really overwhelming like what you said. As for what most said, fenders are a big thing to consider (almost a requirement) especially how tropical the weather is in SEA.

All true, but then what would I wear on dates? ;)

We are talking several months here....

I would not take pants. However this is your tour and your choice. I would not accept too much advice from others, take whatever you feel is best.

Thanks
Yan

I recommend some dual duty sport/hiking pants from synthetic material. Much lighter, smaller to pack, dries quickly. Basically the opposite from denims.

Isn't there a little irony here?

Ha! There is but I think what Yan is saying is that I need to think for myself because there will always be someone saying the opposite of what someone else said. However, if 99% of posters say "wear bike shorts" I will seriously think that over and probably agree. As far as the final product I'll set it up and post a pic soon. It's just a mishmash of advice, logic, and my own style. As I think any project should be.
