Brompton front wheel cones

The cones on my single wall front wheel (the old style) need replacing. Does anyone have a source for these? With an 8.5 mm axle I can't find any. Irritating to simply replace the wheel.

made a quick search in two UK shops. All I could find was the complete front hub costing less than £ 13,-

Be easier perhaps to buy a wheel off Ebay..

I already contacted Perennial Cycles who said they had no cones and my best bet was a new wheel. They had one of the new double wall sort that was left when a customer upgraded to a dynamo wheel, for 59.99 and 2.00 shipping and I ordered that. I could try a couple of the other larger dealers, Clever Cycles in Portland and NYCE, but I bet they will be the same. And I can email the two links bad mother sent me. Seems to me axle cones are a semi-consumable sort of thing that should be obtainable since a wheel could easily last through several cones until the rim is worn too much to be safe.

There are generally front wheels for sale on Ebay co.uk..Could you not fit a wheel or hub from a Bike Friday Tikit or Ori Mezzo?..I know they have a bigger axle but would it matter if you just got the whole hub..?

I agree with the OP, cones are consumables and should be readily available. Having to purchase a new front hub for two small parts is kind of overkill.

Could be about the demand. I would think that if you are going to pay somebody for fixing your problem the cheapest solution would be a new wheel.

If wery few peopel can fix such things at home the demand is not enough to justify selling them and if peopel do not know where to start to look for the cones it`ll look like the demand is low...

I suggest the OP email Brompton mothership and ask. Maybe they can give you a parts number that you can then give to your dealer- or it is not a Brompton specific part so they could tell you where to buy it.

What about e-bay?

SJS Cycles UK will ship to places without Brompton dealers, in that country,

otherwise the company has dealers in your country that will ship you replacement parts
Brompton website will tell you where they are.

USA has a lot of Brompton dealers, now.. Nyce wheels in NYC

and Clever cycles in PDX foldabikes in Palo Alto retired and Closed,
he was one of the few US dealers for a long time.

Axle is 8mm, so cones have to be that , most are 9mm for regular hubs..

NB: Ask "Can you get them?", if they don't stock them, already,

... just sitting on the shelf in anticipation of your call..

...

I contacted all 4 US Brompton dealers and the folks at clever cycles found me a barely used axle and fixins for 17.00 including shipping. Thanks for all your suggestions. I guess I got lucky....even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every once in a while!
