need some help choosing new pedals

So the truly crappy pedals on my POS folding bike are dying fast, and I need to replace them.

Keep in mind that this bike is nothing I consider a decent ride, but it serves a purpose as a beater/errand bike, plus it's my one way ride when I need to rent a car.

So, I'm shopping pedals, and don't want to spend much but, besides the ability to fold, there's only one thing I really care about. That's that they're decently rigid and locked in the open position because sloppy pedals make the whole bike feel worse than it really is.

So, I need advice, but when naming specific pedals please focus on whether they lock open rigidly. I'm most interested in the flip side, namely which to avoid because they don't. I'm not looking for anything really good, just trying to avoid truly bad ones.

Thanks

9/16 or 1/2 inch threads? Roger

Good point,

9/16"

Have you considered MKS removable pedals? Folding pedals develop play much faster than standard pedals. I started using non-folding pedals, because they are much more durable.

Thanks,
Yan

Yes, I'd prefer these to folding. If you don't lose critical parts

I've got a set of MM-Cube pedals, but unfortunately I don't think they're quite SPD compatible. Close, but I can't interchange cleats with the rest of my bikes.

Actually, I'm currently using a set of conventional pedals from other bikes, and would be very happy to give up on the folding feature. However, I have a width issue where I sometimes stow this bike, so at least the right pedal has to fold or be removed.

As I said, this bike is used only for certain situations, and I greatly prefer riding either the commuter or road bike. So quality isn't that big a deal, but since I spend 95% of my time on non folding pedals, the sloppiness is very noticeable and I'd love to avoid it if possible.

If there aren't any halfway decent folding pedals out there, then plan B is to use any of my other pedals, carry a short pedal wrench and remove the right one when I need to.

BTW - clipless pedals of any kind aren't in the cards. This is an errand bike and I usually ride it wearing Crocs. I'm not looking for anything good, just for something that's not obviously bad.

MKS MT-E Ezy

These are solid, removable pedals with zero play. They go for about $55.

Great pedal, but they would probably be the most valuable part of the bike from the sound of it. Doesn't Wallmart do something BMX like for a few dollars that you can chuck away when they start to get grounchy & rattley.

He needs folding pedals for storage.

MKS is by far the nicest alternative. If you take the pedal out . it has the slimmest profile, much narrower than any folding pedal. keep in mind that with a folding pedal you save about 50 to maybe 60 % of the regular width ... The nicest folding pedal is maybe the mks fd series. But the take apart pedals win in the weight and width category all the time .

I got a bag of reusable Zip ties , so you can tie the removed pedal to the bike, MKS EZ Superior, a good one, and not loose it,

If tying a few Knots in some cordage is too slow..

Asian (MKS has some of those too..) Folding pedals are not as subtantial as Brompton's,
but Brompton's Cost, is probably more than you want to spend..

I only have personal experience with Brompton's folding Pedal.. but it has been Good..

(Used bike, but by showing them a close up of stress cracks they sent a new Pedal)

:innocent:

I too ride a cheapo folding bike that I don't like throwing too much money at. I have these inexpensive pedals. They seem ok and pretty rigid. They are spring loaded. You fold them by pressing them in towards the bike then flipping them down. the only downside is because I don't have a kick stand when I lay my bike on the ground on it's side the weight of the bike will fold the pedals so I have to make sure I check every time I get back on the bike.

FYI the bearings in those pedals fail often, then play develops in the axle.

Thanks

Thanks to the both of you (immediately above this). I found those pedals on the net and was considering them. They're in the price ballpark, and unless I see an alternative, I might just gamble on the bearings.

Wellgo QRD

I find the MKS too slippery, I have to run power grips on them. My favorite removable peddle is Wellgo QRD . Far less fiddley one hand removable , replaceable pins like a BMX peddle, about 35$ on eBay.

jefmcg 02-28-17 04:30 AM

a vote for MKS FD-7s. Mine have about 5000km on them. Never serviced them. Rock solid with no play.

Wellgo QRD-M138 pedals? or which.

Yes, I run the Wellgo M138 on a Bike Friday ticket for 5 years. Don't have super high mileage on them but they are quality level pedals.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/141110831343

I also have the MKS on Dahon speed TR. Again not my primary rider(not high miles but run them about 7 years), MKS obviously a high quality brand, this model did not go on my repeat buy list till I put on foot retention system.

Sounds like OP found the appropriate price point quality level he wanted anyways.

Both the MKS and the QRD sound overkill for an occasional used short run beater.

MKS FD7 is my personal choice, it can be had for about 40$ on amazon. I use regular platform bmx/mtb pedals on my other folder from REI for like $20, a little too wide but solid. I broke the bearings on the stock wellgo steel pedals on my other dahon so I just bought the platforms from REI and the stock plastic folding pedals on my Dahon Vybe is just not doing it for me so I bought the MKS FD7.
