1986 Yellow Dahon California

This item was donated to our all-volunteer charity. For the past five years we have given over 2500 (yes, 2500) refurbished bikes each year to the needy in the Rochester, NY area. We sell items like this to help to pay our expenses. Our web site is

This came from an estate of a person who bought a lot of things and never used them. It has never been ridden as far as I know. There are a few scratches. One pretty bad scratch was from the brake cable housing getting caught. The housing cover was scraped off and the cover of the brake housing gouged the paint at the front of the top tube. Tires are original but the casings are cracked from sitting for a long time flat.

Is the yellow a rare color? I've seen some on eBay, but no yellow.

Any idea of value?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The only model that I am aware of that is collectible are the stainless steel mariners. Sometimes the collectors will buy a bike like this just to get the plastic chain guards and other pieces to complete an incomplete bike.

While a nice example, in my area, they generally don't fetch much. I have restored and rehabbed a number of these and never gotten more than $125. However they were not near as nice as yours. As far as the yellow, I have never seen one before, on the other hand I do not see any of the stickers normally on the bike. Repainted?

They are fun little bikes everybody should have at least one.

We don't seem to have that many in the uk. The only classic style Dahon listed on ebay currently is this one.

Dahon Folding Bicycle

It seems to be a later budget version with a low end chainset and doesn't look half as nice as the California.

I'm looking myself for a classic Dahon so I guess there is some demand and wonder if prices and availability are much better in mainland Europe. I don't need stainless steel but I also don't want one of the low end versions either.
