hub mod for Dahon Boardwalk ?
I have a Dahon Boardwalk . It has front V brakes and a coaster brake hub. I want to install rear brakes so I have both front and rear brakes and do away with the coaster brake. Like to able to pedal backwards freely when it is standing still so I can orient the pedals where I want before taking off. Is there away to modify the coaster hub and do away with the brake so it can turn freely backwards ? I imagine I could get a new 20" wheel with the hub I want but don't want to go to this extreme.

I think there used to be a spring kit you could use to adapt a coaster brake to a freewheel. It depends on the brand of hub on your bike. You might ask in the BMX section of the forum.

thanks Rick,
I will inquire in the BMX forum. Bob |
Replace the back wheel .. standard freewheel hubs are 16t &up, because the hub thread is 1.37x24tpi.
& freewheel pawls, etc, are of a certain size.. Want smaller ? there you need a non standard hub that is smaller... Fwiw, a 3 speed S-A hub starts at 13t.. .... |
I think I could run down a 3 Speed Sram Hub to fit. Certainly the Vitesse D3 is a nice bike with it... The Vitesse D3 Hub has a Coaster brake and I am not sure I could get the coaster brake version. Are there mounts on the Boardwalk for V-Brakes or Caliper Brakes?
