...only I have seen one for sale at a (too ?) good price. I want to buy it if is ok when I go to look, but I do not want to be the beneficiary of someone else's misfortune if it belongs to them.

Unless someone here answers in the affirmative, you have to use other tools to determine if it's stolen - intuition and probing questions.

Intuition: What is your sixth sense telling you? If the owner doesn't appear trustworthy, or is somewhat "off", walk away.

Probing questions: Do you know what frame material is used (aluminum)?
Where was it purchased? How long have you had it? Can you demonstrate how it folds, and how it disassembles into a suitcase? How's the ride quality? Do you know what size wheels and tires it takes (24", 520 and 507, oddball sizes) and how easy is it to get them locally? If they deflect your questions by saying they're selling for a friend, most likely stolen.

One more idea - ask them to meet you at a local police station. That's typically enough to flesh out sellers of stolen merchandise, because that's the last place they want to be seen.
