Origami named to "The Talk" top ten of 2017

Yes, we were excited (but hesitant) when we were contacted by the producers of The Talk (and American estrogen-fueled yack-fest on daytime television) that Origami Bicycles was chosen for their 2017 holiday top ten best products show! Yay!! Sounds great! But, there is a catch......they want us to donate 275 bikes (one for each audience member) for the privilege of having our name uttered by their illustrious voices..(insert the sound of angelic singing here)....

So, if you watch The Talk in late November, keep an eye (and an ear) out for Origami. You won't actually see or hear of our bikes because I am not willing to give away 275 bikes.

For a boutique company, 275 freebie bikes is insane. I'm not surprised you turned them down.

There is no way we could afford to do that. Plus, i'm not really convinced that their audience would be my audience

They need to know that folding bikes are a niche product; very hard to get rich, perhaps even impossible in the presence of Dahon with its market dominance.

Makes it pretty clear everyone should ignore those recommendations - since they are predicated on the vendor donating free stuff to be in the top ten. Which means plenty of the "top ten" are really not, they are just more willing to give stuff away, lol.

I would be shocked if she actually did.

Nope. Pontiac donated all those G6's and the owners got stuck with the tax bill. Some had to sell the car to pay it.

Not a chance. I have donated bikes for auctions to help the homeless in NYC, for environmental groups, etc. But I cannot justify a donation that makes a bunch of privileged pseudo-stars appear generous. Yes, our name may be seen or heard by about 3 million viewers, but it is impossible to quantify any value for that.

I have a friend who owns a well-known scooter store in LA and often “provides”product for a well-known game show or two....he claims the amount of market “impressions” he receives for his largesse is staggering, but it doesnt really make for a measurable uptick in his business.

Additionally he may receive some help from the manufacturer he represents so the pain isnt all his, but then YOU are the manufacturer so who helps you?

Personally, I’d counter the inquiry by offering say a free bike or three or five even IF they purchase the remainder at dead cost or something like that. (Full disclosure...I’m a 40 year veteran technology salesperson...I cant help but “negotiate”!)

That way they know youre interested, but not in a position to go it alone. Im doubtful any other manufacturer is going to be willing to provide that much product full gratis either, so now its likely down to “Lets Make A Deal” time and someone is likely to negotiate something acceptable to both parties....

They made it clear that they were not interested in anything but 275 freebies. I have talked with other show (mainly game shows) and they are much more realistic in their expectations.
