Low-rise rear rack for 20" wheel bike?

I just got an Orbea Katu 20:

As you can see, it's not a folder, but since it sports 20" wheels, I figure someone here might now.

I'd like to add a rear rack that won't be an eyesore like the one in this picture:

Since the rack will only be used to hook up a shopping cart or a compact trunk bag, it can be very low and close to the wheel.

Do you know of a rack that might fit that frame?

Complicated. The attachment points near the seat are quite high for most small profile racks. If your bike is steel you could weld on some lower rack attachment points.

If aluminum you could attach some small "pipe hangers" which would give you some attachment points that are lower down. Not sure I would want to weld something to Alu Frames (people say not after the build). Rivnuts would be an option but my intuition is that you would want to, at the very least, use some epoxy around the rivnuts when you are setting them. Rivnuts are "rivet nuts".. ie nuts that you put in with a rivnut tool which somewhat resembles a pop-rivet tool.

Personally I don't mind the look of that rack that much. Maybe a Stash box could be accommodated like the one pictured (perhaps the whole rack if you rebent the top-forward attachment arms to go upwards instead of downwards).

Seems almost any "adjustable arm" rack for bigger bikes could work for you. I like the Axiom Journey - Unifit if you want one rack to fit nearly any bike.

Any needed modifications to most universal racks would likely end up being as much an “eyesore” as the OP feels the pictured one is unless professional, and expensively done.

I second capitalizing on the space below that taller one.

Your local frame builder could fabricate a rack out of cromoly tubing to fit. Or it could be a project for a metal fabrication shop at a high school. It would take me (an amateur framebuilder) a whole day to make one to fit, with braze-ons for attachment points, fenders and lights. Maybe you have a friendly neighbor who has a torch and would be interested in giving it a try?

you going to get cut down panniers sewn ?, the rack you don't like will take standard bags..

Bike Friday makes a Bag , to go under the rack, over the tire , to utilize the space, available..

The Tern Cargo Rack might fit. If the top stays don't reach, you could search for longer, bent stays to replace them. I've never seen it in person, but it's pretty low, has 4 adjustable stays. The website has 2 PDFs, 1 CAD drawing and an exploded diagram.

I super imposed the CAD drawing over the image of the bike. The green lines are the adjustable stays. If you upturn the bent stay, and angled it upwards just enough, it might reach. But the bent part of the stay might hit against the frame. Maybe add like a 10mm spacer and a longer screw. The photo of the rack you showed above also seems to have spacers.

Here you see if you raise the rack to the highest height, it might fit without needing spacers on the top stay.

If you set to the lowest hight, the stays would hit the frame.

If you flip the adjustable 2 way mounting blocks so they're on top of the rack instead of hanging below, you could find some straight stays and go horizontally across. (not illustrated). But that would take up rack space.

There is also this rack that attaches to the V brake and fender mounts. The top stay is fixed and not adjustable so it might screw on tiled depending on the angle of your frame. The rack itself looks short. This would only work if the screw on the brake can be tightened. For example on my bike, one of the brakes is thicker than the mount, so the screw cannot be tightened or it locks up the brake. Instead a small amount of blue threadlocker keeps the screw in place, but I did lose the screw once before.

I'm also not sure how strong the brake mounts are with heavy loads on a rack like this, but for light loads it may be ok.
