Any modifications on your Dash?
Hi Hendra,
Welcome back from Taiwan -- sounds/looks like good choice for tour. I have done multi-day rides using "regular" road bikes, but I am starting to see the pragmatic nature of foldies. My selip friends in Jakarta are mostly Bro-bros. Please share any insights on advantages of your Dash and how you may or may not have modified it for your Tour de Taiwan. Congrats and thanks. |
Hmmm, advantages of a Dash? Over what? Hard to say...A Dash does not hold as compact as many others so that's a disadvantage. I like it because it has a classic diamond-shape geometry, its rigidity due to that, and uniqueness X-factor. Bromptoms are a dime-a-dozen. A Dash is barang langka (a rare item). Bromptom folks here often approach me to see the Dash. On the Dahon Indonesia FB group with 4.7k members there are only maybe 5 members with Dash-like bikes. If you are interested in this type of bike, i suggest picking up a Dash Altena in Bangkok.
My Dash Altena https://dl.dropbox.com/s/wku83qflmrc...4615.jpg?raw=1 Regarding mods, i essentially took it 'stock'. The only thing i added was an additional bottle cage on the downtube. The bike is pretty capable stock. Gearing is 19-113 gear-inches. Oh yeah, it's Mahendra, not Hendra. Salam.

Maaf Mahendra,
Haha yes I see the Bro-attitude here in Jakarta... Thanks for suggestion re Althena. Complication is that I ride a very large road frame (61-63cm) -- any thoughts/suggestions on how to accommodate my height? |
I am afraid your height may rule out off-the-shelf folders. If you've got the coin, maybe Bike Friday can build one for you based on your personal measurements. A shop on the ground floor of STC Senayan deals in Bike Friday. They can order one for you. There's a handful of Bike Friday devotees here. You can receive the gospel from them.
Other than that, perhaps a separable bike ala Surly Traveller's Check. 'Bro-attitude'? Really? You don't say. No need to go as far as Jakarta to witness it, I am afraid...
