Congrats! You intend on self-supported (camping) touring? Just curious since you didn't get a rack.

No, this will be credit card touring this time... tho I still want lower gears. The 6 speed reduced isnt low enough.

Thats more like it.

Tho I like the plastic pants guard on the stock chainring and dont want to give it up.

Wonder if I can swap out the 2 rear cogs for something slightly bigger?

You can go up to 17t (instead of the stock 16t) w/o filing on the frame. You can go up to 18t with light filing on the rear frame/chainstay. For anything bigger on the BWR hub it needs courage.

Think I want to try a -22% with the 39T chainring for the 26-78" gi range... Can anyone advise a good 39T ring to buy, and do I need a specific bolt pattern for it?

Thanks for the compliments everybody!

I should have no problem finding a 130 BCD 40t chainring. But I really wanted to keep the "pants guard" thing.

Interesting. I sure wont be filing the frame. Do you happen to know what brand/spec cogs I would need?

I'll send you a Pants Guard if you need. I'm with you generally on wearing pants not tights. This is actually mesh so it is very comfortable to wear.

Also, if you are interested, I've modified a Dahon to have a 17 to 96 Gear Inch range. Perhaps some angles like that for your Brompton.
Nice looking bike you have.

Wow that is very generous of you. But first I'm going to try for a solution that keeps the pants guard on the bike, as I'd rather not add things to my bring-it-riding checklist.

One method,
and definitely lighter than anything attached with bolts (Local crop too)

I also have some 46 or 42 Tchain ring protectors (I need to count). They can normally work for smaller chain rings too. I've been pulling these from bikes (below) to build the wide range version I mentioned.

Thanks interceptor... saw your video before too - very helpful. Can I assume the Dura Ace 39T come in one standard bolt pattern (that matches the Brompton)? Also assume using a thinner chainring (for 10 speed rig) should be no problem with the wider(?) Brompton chain?

Brompton uses the common 130 BCD. A lot of brands/models will also fit; SRAM, FSA, etc. Not sure how a 10
speed ring will behave w/ a stock B'ton chain. I'd go with a 8 or 9 speed ring if you want to stick w/ the stock chain.

2013 Brompton DA chainring Ultegra chain by 1nterceptor, on Flickr
To the Op; and others who want to change rings but still have a protector. I've seen mods where owners put a smaller ring(38T, 39T, 40T);
which were designed to be inner rings. At the same time, they install the outer ring(53T, 52T, etc); but they file the teeth off. Presto, guard.

A Surly Stainless steel chainring https://surlybikes.com/parts/drivetr...eel_chainrings

would be my go to .. longer wearing , and flat , so you can flip it over & extend it's use-life ( still go 130 39t )

I have had a Surly 110-38t on my Rohloff bike for many years..
'2.1mm thick' so works with 8 speed / 3/32" chain..

But in addition to the Ultegra-Dura ace 130-39t, you can find a lot of others of that size ,

using the same 7075-T6 aluminum alloy to machine into that part..

..
