Does Kanga Rack Require Mount?

Hi guys,

I'm looking at the Kanga rack for the front of a Dahon. All of a sudden I realize that the rack itself might not be enough. Does it require some kind of mounting bracket? I keep hearing about this Klickfix. What are the options here?

If it does require a mount, that seems to jack the price of this add-on up considerably. I'd like to hear workarounds...that don't involve duct tape.

Thanks!

yes, it needs a mount. I got my kanga and mount from thorusa; great people to work with. If memory serves, there's the Tern branded truss, which is klickfix compatible. I dunno if its still the best choice for the Kanga, but Thor would know. It's a good rack. Thanks to the Tern truss it does stick out a bit more than I'd like when folded. But not so much so as to be really problematic.

They also have a competing mount/rack combo from Dahon. I don't recall that being a choice at the time; so I didn't strive to do a comparison. Either I'd missed the possibility, or its newer ;>

https://thorusa.com/accessories/baskets.htm . I've got the tern+kanga as illustrated on this page.

I should say, get something like a small duffle (Matador makes a killer packable one). The kanga shape doesn't lend itself to just bunging a typical shopping bag. My various panniers don't really attach to it either, but duffle bags are perfect.

Klick fix is German like Ortlieb.. as far as I can tell Velofred is the US Importer

KF can supply both but they don't call it a Kanga rack

Someone who has used both the Dahon truss/rack and/or basket and the Tern/Kanga (Thor?) would be great to have a side by side review. If someone sent me the Dahon setup I could do the review (although my daily ride is a Stromer, I do have a Dahon Speed D7 handy) ;>

Thor sells both the Tern truss and the Kanga rack (which comes with the Klickflix; dunno if they get it from Velofred ... doesn't matter to me as the user ;>).

I have used the Tern Luggage Trus (TLT) , versions I and II, and the Tern Kanga Rack for the last four years. The Rack mounts on a Klickfix caddy, any Klickfix caddy. The TLT bolts on to the Dahon front block, and has a Klickfix caddy at the other end. They are both quite decent, and not too expensive. 7kg limit on the Truss, though.

Does that include the rack? Because your blue bag looks quite heavy. I'm looking for a space to fit in a tent, sleeping bag, and air mattress. Not sure if I'll get in under the 7g limit.

Consider tweaking the Brompton luggage block with a Dremel drill. Since it's shorter than the truss, it supports a bit more (on the Brompton, it's 10kg).

[Dahon/Tern] Brompton-like baggage block?

No. 7kg is the rated load on the truss. The rack weighs about 500 grams so you can load about 6.5kg on the rack/truss emsemble.

My 18L blue dry-bag never had more than 4.5kg in it. I am getting ready to tour again. an option, one that i am using is to carry the tent and sleeping pad in a seatpost bag. i managed too fit the tent (Sierra Designs Light Year) in a 10L Topeak seatpost bag with room to spare. I'll post pics this weekend of the whole rig...
