Backpack for front carrier (Brompton)

Does anyone know any backpacks that you can clip on to the front carrier on the Brompton? All the bags I've seen until now only have a shoulder strap.

My other plan would be to get the Tote Bag in grey and have some backpack straps added by a tailor.
What do you think about this idea?

Schwinnsta 05-29-18 11:14 AM

Yes, I believe Brompton sells one. Not sure of model name but I think it might be the B bag. I don't have one but my Brompton store had one.

I like the shoulder strap .. with my Touring bag.. its just one... but that's enough..

Klick Fix makes a back pack * which engages their mounts, you can get their bracket for the seat post.

A japanese company makes a Brompton mount to Klickfix adapter.
have to get it from japan, though.

But maybe with the Brompton front bag frame you can get creative , and modify a back pack to attach to it?

* there are also people who use the rear rack and the back of the saddle
to carry a backcountry back pack on the back of their bikes for long tours..

I use a Brompton T-Bag and just swapped in a longer shoulder strap and rig it as dual backpack straps - clicky. Simple, adds no extra weight or bulk, and comfortable enough for short term use with my sub-10kg touring load. I also ride with it on my back across rougher road and dirt sections - it just makes me cringe watching a weighty unsprung T-Bag hammering the mount across rough sections.

The other thing I am thinking about is just buying an extra frame piece, and then tailoring it to fit one my favorite bags.

I am converting a T-bag into a backpack. The main task was to attach replacement shoulder straps and back pad for Osprey packs that I was able to get for pennies on Ebay - may be harder now due to hiking season. This already works very well but I am still working on some additional padding to ensure that the low side of the T-back frame is easy on the user's back.

I too have been looking for a Brompton front block backpack that I can take to work with a laptop in it. I wanted a setup that I could carry on my back on days I ride my other bikes to work. My searches came up with nothing. I almost went the route of getting a frame and rigging my Osprey Momentum to be permanently attached to it but then decided not to do it because a rigid frame will be uncomfortable on my back.

Finally decided to get a Brompton folding basket and throw in my backpack in there and singe it to hold it upright and keep it in place. Plus the basket will be useful when I ride with my kid to the park carrying her toys and on grocery runs. Ordered the basket from REI and waiting for it to arrive to try it out.

Interesting to see what others are doing.

It might be possible to add some material (foam pipe insulation?) around the frame so that it's comfortable on the back.

If not, you could just use the frame as-is and use a strap to hold the backpack while riding.

Alternatively, if you don't mind giving up the Brompton bagage block and installing the Caddy adapter on the stem, there are some Klickfix-compatible backpacks.

Carradice bags and Ortlieb O bag are targeting the laptop toting commuter.

O bag , You get a nice shoulder strap , , Carradice you add the Brompton bag frame.. not included..
and perhaps sew in D rings if you must have backpack straps, to clip on,
just when you need them .

I scored one of the old steel bag support frame and hired a wider base brazed on to make it into a utility carrier,
then got the finished piece powder coated ..

Got the folding basket today. My original plan was to keep the backpack upright in the basket but noticed ample space on both sides which is good if you have the side pockets loaded with Nalgee bottles for example. Mine just had a hand towel so I placed it sideways and it fits in nicely and might work better when I swap the M bars to S.

Yes, you could try sewing something for yourself. rather than delegating
to the 'You Guys Should' committee, and wanting it sold for cheap.

For this level, I really suggest getting any of the Osprey replacement shoulder straps, such as here, and attaching them to the Brompton T-bag. They will for sure provide more comfort and the bag will be sturdier and yield more capacity. Yes, the straps will dangle, but that is not much of an issue in practice. I got such straps on Ebay for $15 including shipping.

I have an S type Brompton and although I have to adjust the brakes a bit can use a folding basket bag with it, and use it for trips to the grocery store. I was pleasantly surprised by how much it could hold and how that weight actually improved the handling. On another occasion I had to deliver brochures to houses which were fairly far apart and it worked well since I could reach over the bars and grab a brochure after cycling door to door. The downside was heading into the wind as the bag adds a lot of drag, being so large.

This is brilliant, thank you for the idea! I just tried it with my T-bag, a longer shoulder strap I had laying around and a velcro strap and it feels pretty comfortable. We're getting ready for an international bike trip and I've been trying to figure out how to juggle all of our bags, especially at the airport and hotels. This trick will definitely help.

I got a Brompton front rack and then sewed velcro on an old Timbuktu messenger bag.

You can also just hang a backpack off the handlebars; I hang a hydration backpack on my Birdy handlebars with no problems.

Any backpack with an add-a-bag sleeve combined with a front carrier frame from the Bromptonic store will do the job.

Hope this helps.

Since Brompton does not make any real backpacks you need to look for a backpack with a sleeve on the back and combine that with a narrow front rack without a handle. Solution is shown on the Bromptonic site.

I have not considered using a backpack for the front rack yet. Nice to see the options here!

Demano in Barcelona makes backpacks that also fit on a front carrier block: https://demano.net/en/21-bike-bags

Those connect to the handlebar not the frame block and will effect the steering.
