Panniers on small rack
I have the Dahon Mariner D8. It came with a rack like this one (Dahon Bikes USA - Arclite Aluminum Rack Black (for 20" Wheel)). So it is much smaller than a regular sized rack. I know I can get a bigger rack, but I like the small rack that it came with.
I was wondering what people have used as panniers on a small rack (not a regular full sized rack) I was thinking something like this Ortlieb downtown (https://www.modernbike.com/product-2126214877). Looks shorter than the regular panniers for ground clearance. But I am not sure about the heel clearance. |
Want to try sewing? its not as easy as asking shopping leads , but not that difficult..
average small panniers are 12" tall .. might hang rather low, y/n ? alternate the low rack can support a single large pack sitting on top of it it has been a touring option others have used .. full back country packs.. the rack for your chosen bag from the seller you found https://www.modernbike.com/ortlieb-r...1-only---black There are options to fit a bag on the seat post , like the Xooter cross tack , or some of Carradice SQR, and Klick Fix & top of that rack with its own QR mount Ortlieb has one , for your laptop hauling... .... |
Whelp, I have a Mariner 8 and some front Ortlieb panniers, so I gave it a whirl. Yes, they fit..no, you can't ride it that way. No heel clearance. If you want a big shopper bag, Ortlieb makes a couple different ones that sit on top of the rack with a quick-disconnect system. My standard Ortlieb trunk bag with that system fits.

FWIW, I just bought the taller Dahon rack. The stock low one was useless IMO. |
The stock one is fine for its intended use: Using the bungee strap to carry stuff or mounting a trunk bag. The idea behind it is it sits low so a commuter can fold it with the bag still on and it won't sit up too high.
One thing I like about it is I can run my Ortlieb trunk bag, plus a traditional saddlebag hung from my Brooks saddle for shopping runs. |
I got a cheap small one from eBay - rockbros panniers. Later I noticed amazon is selling each for 20 bucks.
It says 18L, but is probably to the top of he panniers without rolling the top. The rolling top is short, so you can roll only twice on half full and the straps are elastic, so it doesn't really hold it tight. I am a fair weather rider, so no issue with water - but if I have to, I would have an elastic band or something to keep it shut. Had some 300 miles on them carrying jeans, shoes, lunch box for commute + long weekend rides and holds well for road/paved trail. The hardware (plastic mount) is easy to click and click out from my rack. |
https://geek.wish.com/product/58086cf18ad0b72103fd40c1 Seems to work well on my Dahon. Most of the time, just use it as a trunk bag. The pannier fold outs are small, but usable in a pinch. I've got a kanga rack on the front and a duffle to a backpack up front can help keep the front end down on hills.
